Wiping most of it off then using brake clean works. I normally run the brake pads or clutch plates through a bead blaster to finish it off.
I have done this when I was in a bind (Lack of parts available or lack of funds) and everything turned out okay. Please be aware that the warnings have merit and it's not recommended unless there is absolutely no other choice.

Use MEK (methyl ethyl keytone). Buy it in the paint section of Lowe or a home store. It's safer than acetone (which will work very well).

Rick, oil and grease cannot be removed completely from clutche or brake linings believe me.
You will think they look clean but as soon as they heat up, more will come out.
You need to renew or reline the plate, the extra expence is justifiable compared to removing the clutche a second time.

I would try a chlorinated solvent such as CRC's Brakleen.

Acetone removes grease better than anything but read and follow the label directions. It's kinda nasty stuff.
