All,

I'll take any advise on this. I am building a homemade 6 way dozer blade for my skidloader. I've been given a belly blade for a northern road plowing tandem axle rtuck. I am tryng to retro-fit the hydraulics, but need to weld ears onto the hydraulic cylinder body to make it work. Is this something I should/can do? Any pointers welcome. For what it's worth, it's a 1.5 inch diameter ram with about 7 inches of travel. Thanks in advance,

D.

A cylinder needs a smooth bore to seal and not wear out. See what a pice of metal looks like on the backside after welding. Not a good seal or smooth surface.

Rather than trying to weld on the cylinder, and possibly distorting it....why dont you weld the clips to a steel, round bracket to fit over the cylinder....like a big hose clamp, and bolt them on. Works for me !! Jim B.

I think you can,but you want to get the oil out and seal it to where no air can get in.That way if you dont get all of the oil out it might not catch on fire inside.Which ever end you work on you want the ram at the other end so you dont melt the seals.

If not cast go to welding. I just put two cylinders together for my plow. Take oil out first.

If your welding on the barrel of the cylinder, I don't think it will work as you will distort the bore. Could be wrong.

Might look at Northern Hydraulics or Surplus center in Nebraska and see if they have something that would work.

If you do weld on it. Get all the oil out and have the internal piston at full stroke out and that end of the cylinder in a bucket of water to keep from frying the piston sealing rings.

The auto-ignition point for hydraulic oil is 650 degrees Fahrenheit.
