I removed the sensing unit on my IH 340 U. It looks pretty bad, but haven't been able to locate another one. Can this one be repaired? What needs to be done? The gas tank guage is new.

Fred, if you can prise open the cover of the sender unit you should be able to see the finger that runs on the resistance windings. If you look carefully you may find either a broken wire or more commonly the finger has lost its tension against the winding, remedy either of these problems and you should have a fix.
Replace the cover, they usually have bent over tabs holding them on which can be reused if manipulated carefully. To test, rig it to the wiring outside the tank, earth the neccessary portion of the unit and work the float up and down by hand, you should see the gauge move.
Good luck Dicko
