The "bumper" is just fixed rigidly in place. I am pretty sure it would compress a little before and release the string.

My string is old (left over from last year), but I think I have other issues.

The one I have chosen is to go buy the disposable $69 jobs like Lowe"s sells, use them for 3-4 years or until they begin to act up and then toss them. Amortize the cost of owning a high dollar rig over it"s expected life and see if it costs less than $25 a year to own. That"s an eye opener! Other than snob appeal, it"s highly unlikely you"ll get your money"s worth. Before some Bozo chimes in about how he fells timber with his saw blades and tills his garden and so forth..... we"re talking a string trimmer here.

If you insist on spending money, buy a Shindaiwa, they seem to outlast the rest.

I don't have a driveway like that, but I do have 2 1/2 acres of yard, several buildings, and a ga-zillion fruit trees and bushes, walks and flowerbeds to trim around. I'll typically burn 4 tanks through my weedeater by time I am finished. The engines never fail, I've tossed lots of good 2 cycle engines in the garbage. It's always the bump heads that go south. I tried repairing them. At about $20 to fix the stupid head...that's almost 1/3 the cost of the unit. Then the throttle cable gets worn or the gas tank begins to leak or the recoil starter goes limp. I just bought another $69 weedeater this spring...used the other one 3 years. I have lived long enough to learn that trying to squeeze a nickel until it squeals causes more headaches than it's worth. Weedeaters and electric hand tools are disposable items to me. The day it causes grief, is the day it hits the garbage can.
