Are the symbols for automotive electrical systems the same as symbols used in industrial (3-phase) and residential wiring? Does anyone have an on line source for these symbols (short of buying a book) Thanks in advance. J.

Here is an online source for 4 pages of Industrial Electrical symbols. You have to pick the subject area and then "additional resources." If you don't find them, I can E-mail them to you. I have used these in some electrical classes I teach. Not all symbols are identical, but usually similar enough that you can figure them out.

The only differance I know is if you run into POWER circuit diaghrams. On these, which alway mess my mind up, a open switch contact is depected as a capacitor. A closed switch contact is depicted as a shorted cap.

The local Princess Auto Stores sell those 3X5 "fact books" for about $10.00. There is every electrical sign, formula, chemical data, belt, thread, bolt, torque, fastener, lumber, building, concrete, finacial bit of data in there etc.
I keep a couple. One beside the computer and the other in the shop. Truely one of the all time bargans out there.

Symbols for what application? in reply to J Schwiebert, 05-15-2008 05:26:51
Symbols may vary even between application as far as a schematic, or building plans, and such.

I may be able to help you find something online through Google but would need to know,

What are you trying to do or read?
