What is the correct way to rotate radial tires? The manual in my truck says to bring the rear tres forward and move front tires to opposite rear corners. I've talked to people who say with radials you should only move the tires forward/ backwards on the same side, never move the tires to other side of the vehicle. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I just put them on and run them. By the time they are worn enough to warrent rotation, they are weather checked bad enough they won't pass Pa. inspection anyway.

Check the sidewall of the tires to make sure they are not directional. Even a lot of passenger car tires are directional now, and you would not want to cross rotate them.
To be on the safe side, just rotate front to rear.

I"ve been in the tire business for over 25 years so I should be in the know. Your manual IS RIGHT. We say "Cross the NON drive axle, and the drive axle goes straight forward or back."

Oleblu, what do you do for the susequent rotations of the tires? If the tires were rotated a second time and the same proceedure were followed as the first time they were rotated then the tires would end up on opposite sides front and back with respect to the original locations. Do you reverse the proceedure and end up with the tires back on the original locations? That would require a record of the tire rotations and the placement of the tires with respect to the original locations or marking the tire/wheels to indicate original locations. Tire manufactures suggest rotating every 5,000 miles.

Vern, with the "cross the non drive axle, others go straight forward or back" method in 4 rotations each tire would see every position on the vehicle. No need to keep any records (other than milage so you know when it is time to rotate) unless you have a full size spare and do a 5 tire rotation. Yes, directional tires or directional rims are a PITA!! Some cars (older Camaro's, I think) had a wider rim on the rear. Again, PITA Old Goodyear Aquatread with "whitewall", directional tire, so you had to order "lefts and rights". What a hassle. Locking hubcaps and anti-theft lug nuts, don't get me started! Yes, I love my job. That's why I mainly do semi tires with the ocasonal car or van flat. Get to meet some realy nice people and some that aren't.

86-87 Pontiac GTAs....different offset front and rear. As you also mentioned- a lot of cars have directional wheels now (I almost forgot about that)...plus TPMS, so you'll need to recalibrate sensors. They find a way to make even the simplest thing difficult. Used to do rotations for free- w/ TPMS we'll all end up charging big bucks for it

I agree with Oleblu as well. With this method, the tires eventually end up at each location on the vehicle, which will maximize your treadlife. Unless you have a full locker, your right rear or right front ultimately will wear the quickest. If you rotate only front to rear, it will remain on the right side, and wear more quickly than if it were swapped side to side every other rotation.

Do as the manual says.

I have swapped them around from side to side with no problems. I think in the early days of radials it would of caused a problem though.

In the old days the tires were junk and they had to blame something so it was the rotation. Cross them like oleblue says.
