JB Weld and grease fitting

I tapped a hole in the cover of the gearbox on my NH 55 rake. I threaded the hole but the grease fitting wont thread in. Can I drill out the hole a little more, grind the paint off, make sure the grease fitting is clean, and jb weld it on. I just need some way to fill the gearbox with grease. Thanks Guys!

You need what is called a bottomless tap. It is a tap that is cut off like the threaded end of a bolt. It does not have a point on the threaded end. I have made them from a regular tap by grinding the end off flat.... Try that...JB

I've got an old Bush Hog that I use grease in the gearbox. I took the original pipe plug out and replaced it with a reducer that the zerk would screw into.

If its 1/8-27NPT there are different sizes of tap because of the taper.I have one or two that cut smaller than others so you either need to run yours in deeper [further into the taper] or try another same size but slightly bigger tap.Its the right thread just not cut deep enough.

Hmm.. you tappe dthe hole but the fitting won't thread in. I'd say you have the wrong fitting or tap.

forget the jbweld here.. get the right size fitting. You can always go to the large sae fittings if you redrill the hole after a 'whoops' action..

i filled my NH 256 rake gearbox with 2 tubes of grease. eaiser than changing the seal and grease is what is recommended now instead of oil.

we've used grease in gearboxes on leaky batwing mowers....just had to use 0 or 00 grease to keep heat from building up, be sure not to overfill.

I'd just make the hole large enough for the grease gun end to enter the box and tap for a plug. wouldn't worry about the zerk...

What thread did you tap it to? The most common zerk threads are 1/8 pipe, 1/4 SAE and 6mmX1.00. The 6mm looks a lot like a 1/4 SAE but won't screw into it.

Most grease zerks are 1/8 pipe threads. Assumeing you did use the proper tap, just run the tap a little further in the hole, that will enlarge it a little so that the fitting will then screw in.

your gearbox should have 90w gearoil not grease.

NH now recommends that you fill it with grease instead of the gear oil
