I recently bought a 50 or 60 year old Craftsman floor-mount drill press. For general fabricating and shop use, can anyone recommend a good drill press vise for that press? Does anyone know where to get a chuck key for an old Craftsman 1/2"?

Also, does anyone know offhand of a source of a big belt pulley that will fit the press so I can gear it down?

The Amish around here adapt riding lawn mower
transmissions to such drill press'es and
power them with a line shaft, or a gas engine!
That's doing it the hard way, to avoid the
electric motor, but the transmission idea is good.

Any good hardware store should have a chuck key. Is your press gold in color? Mine has a 4 step pulley system. I have a DC motor for mine that I need to install sometime soon. Will keep the driven pulley and adapt the DC motor to belt up to it. Its a great old press once you get some way to control the spindle speed.I bought a vice from Harbor Freight. Cheap, but it does the job.

I have one of about that vintage as well that dad bought new. For your speed problem I want to install a jack shaft in the drive with two different size pulleys on th jack shaft so I can also gear it down. I was thinking on the way back home this week about finding a source for parts. At one time Sears offered a spindle for them that was a #2 Morse taper. I would like to find one. What model is yours? J.

For the vise, key, etc, try Enco.

For the pulley, try Surpluscenter.com or Grainger.

For a 4" cross vise is there a preferred brand or will anything do for general use. I am too poor to buy junk and sometimes too dumb to know the difference.
