Rate of acetylene use

If the rule of thumb is to use acetylene at a rate of no more than 1/7 of the bottle per hour, is that the same as saying 1/7 of the tank pressure of a full bottle (which is usually around 400 psi, isn't it?) In other words, can you use about 60 psi or less worth of acetylene per hour regardless of the size of the bottle or the amount that's left in it?

The total C.F. of the tank is stamped on the top of the tank(around 135cf) and check the specifications on your tip for maximum flow. And if you lay a tank down stand it up for an hour or two or you will be rebuilding the regulator.

I think it pretty much has to do with tank volume, not the volume of gas left in the tank. Acetylene in the cylinder is dissolved in acetone, and the volume of acetone in the tank is constant. The bigger the tank, the faster the acetylene can be released from the acetone.

Also, I don't think you should rely on the pressure in the cylinder as a measure of how fast you are drawing it down. Just look up the tip you're using on your torch manufacturer's tip chart to see what its flow rate should be.

I believe that Acetylene, becomes unstable above 15PSI. The Acetylene regulator on my rig, mfr'd by Smith, will not go above that, though I set it much lower, depending on what I'm doing.

Another one is not laying the Acetylene tank on its side, if so, it needs to be upright for awhile, like maybe over night, though I play it safe and keep em upright, not sure how that works, but do know enough to respect volatile compressed gases and those tanks.

Well, here's what I think. Pressure falls quicker the less gas is in the tank. Meaning that one cubic foot of gas would take alot more pressure from an almost empty tank than it would from an almost full tank. That's why you tend to have to turn up the regulator a bit ev'ry day. I would go with a more conservative number just to be on the safe side. If I had my own torch I'd keep a log and find out for sure.

Whole lot less than oxygen. Got a tank bout 10 years old. Used about 15 tanks of oxy.

But whatever you figure it out to be, you can rest assured that is with a new tank under perfect conditions.

I've always found that when I need to heat a big chunk of metal with the rosebud, that unless I am at the local college, or another industrial site with the largest bottles, or multiple tanks ganged together, it is going to be a tough go getting enough out of the bottle fast enough.

Hi Rob,

I agree that it's ultimately about the volume, but the only available means of measuring it are the tank's psi and its weight. I've never heard of anybody weighing the tank as they use the gas, so that leaves only the pressure as measured on the gauge, doesn't it? It makes me wonder if it isn't one of those things where all you can do is to do your best and it either works or it doesn't.

Anybody ever had acetone get into their acetylene regulator that wasn't the result of the bottle being on its side at the time or recently?

I think a person could install a meter to read volume used. Kinda like a gas meter on a house, gaspump etc.
