What is the difference in the w price of manifold gauge sets . I see that they vary considerably in price. Have not serviced an AC in 30 years and no longer have tools and have forgotten much.

I got a manifold set from Harbor Freight that the vales were stuck on. Knobs turned but would not move the valve cores. They took them back with no problems but I ended up having to charge a new compressor/dryer setup with one of those clamp on the can hoses. Luckily I guess The valves were leaking enough that I got a good vacuum before I charged the system.

By the way, cheapest place I have found for -134 freon is Dollar General. $5.00/can everyday.

Bob, Sams club has R134a for about $2.70 per can.
Paid for my Sams membership on 2 cases of Refrigerant.

Moonlite:

The differences in prices on Manifold Gauges are the way they are constructed and materials used. Plastic handles vs metal. The type of valve body, brass vs aluminum. The type of actual valves. The type of Gauges. One can spend anywhere from $60.00 to a couple of hundred. Robinair (SPX) has been around for a long time and is a good Manifold.

While we're on the subject,

I added a couple 12oz cans R12 to the Aerostar (dual air) the other day.

It's been about 4-5 years since it had any, and the engine pretty much had to warm to get the ac fired up to assist the defrost on those cold mornings.

I was able to find some R12 on Craigslist for about $20 a can.

I shudder to even think about what would have happened if I took it to a shop.

Remove, recycle, and evacuate the 3 lbs of freon still in it. $200?

Add 4.5 Lbs of freon @ $100lb $450?

test and leak test to decide it needs an orafice tube or some other un-needed repair.

Remove, recycle, and evacuate the 4.5 lbs of freon still in it. $300?

Do required repairs $150+

Add 4.5 Lbs of freon @ $100lb $450?

Why not change it over to 134A?

Yes indeed,"why not convert it to R134a ?"
No way would I mess with over priced R12.

I have converted several dozen Cars, trucks, tractors, combines to R134a and have yet to find one that won't work with R134a, even the early Dodge Caravans with woefully undersized condensers.
DIY conversion cost rarely exceeds $100.

Because for the <$40 It's all good to go (for another 5 years?)and blows real cold.

To properly retrofit to 134a would require a lot more than that.
