South Bend milling machine

I've got an old S.B. milling machine I acquired a while back. I've got it working now but the only problem is that I only have one collet for it.

The collets have a double taper, but the taper is unique to S.B. I haven't found any in the usual catalogs that match up.

Anyone know where I can find some collets that might work?

Fortunately the one I do have is 1/2" and at least I can get a lot of stuff with that shank size.

I agree with wdTom, make some on your own or have someone make them for you. If you don't have a lathe them this will be a good excuse to get one!

Can you or a friend with a lathe make some collets of different sizes? Even if they are not heattreated they may last you a long time if you are not using them in production and you take care of them. Maybe make them out of a tool steel or a heat treated 4140 steel, around 28 or 30 rockwell c. This can still be worked with HSS tools.

Thanks guys

I'll look into the later tool holders with the same taper.

Tried contacting them a while back. They were bought out by LeBlonde. The man was real nice, but he just didn't have any info or blueprints of stuff to look at.

I found this statement online:
"South bend milling machine spindles do not have a drawbar. Instead, the 30taper tooling is retained by a setscrew on each side, through the keys. This was referred to as "30 MM" taper tooling. It is essentially obsolete, and the collets for the original chuck are scarce. An ER40 (or 30) collet chuck with an integral NMTB 30 taper can be easily modified to fit a SB spindle merely by milling the necessay setscrew pads into each side, centered on the key drive slots."

I cannot attest to its validity.

I assume the chuck holds some standard collet, such as DA, ER, etc. Look at MSC, or email a picture to me. I might be able to help.

Perhaps you could contact the manufacturer with the serial number and they could tell you what type of collets to use. Then you could go to Hardinge or ebay or other places that sell collets. From my experience, prior to R8 becoming the standard of the industry, everybody had their own proprietary profile. I've seen two identical Burkes with different collets.
