Who makes a really good set? Something that will handle up to a 3" snap ring? Preferably interchangeable tips with various sized pins, both straight and angled, and a set of handles for inside and outside snap rings.

Borrowed a set from my buddy the Maintenance Foreman at the local cannery. Three handles (large, medium, small) with interchangable tips. Large handle has a ratchet mechanism and has two pushbuttons to swap from inside to outside use. Slicker than a smelt, wicked well built. $90 for the set from McMaster-Carr, box says "Hi Tech" on it, don't know if that's the manufacturer or not.

Had him order a set for me...

I'm glad someone mentioned Milbar. They are the best ones I own. They do both internal and external, you just undo the pivot screw and swap them over.
There is a cheaper version that has a slotted hole to switch them over, but these one's can slip under pressure, not good, can cause bad language to occur.
The milbar ones are not slotted you have to remove the screw completely to switch them and thats much better.

OTC sells a unique snap ring tool that I use for a lot of farm uses. They sell it to John Deere as a JDG983. It looks similar to a 2 jaw puller, only the legs/jaws hold various snap ring tips. and the center screw adjusts the opening. Its fairly new but works great. Check out their websit for phone numbers.

Milbar makes maybe as much as 90% of all snap-ring pliers made in the U.S. under their own brand as well as brands such as Snap-On, Armstrong, Proto, Williams, Wilde, and probably 50 more.

The large ratcheting retaining ring pliers you seek probably all look the same as this is an area where Milbar dominates and most that your will find in the market are identical except for the brand name.

However, I do not have an OTC catalog and don't know what their tool looks like. Maybe they are the exception.

all of above are right. one thing i,e found is interchangeable tips aren,t a good thing but in smaller sizes handles which can go both ways are a good buy just remember you get what you pay for
