Let me start out by saying again how MUCH I appreciate each of you responding to my questions. Your responses significantly increase my knowledge on given topics as well as influence my purchasing decisions.

I have had limited experience painting. Thus far my experience has been with a knock-off Binks high-pressure paint gun.

I have some rather ambitious short and long range painting goals...cars, trucks, tractors, trailers, etc.

With good paint being too expensive to shoot in the air, what HVLP gun do you recommend? Any certain brand/gun? Who offers the best "bang for the buck"?

Thank you,
Glenn F.

The HVLP spray guns use a lot of air so you need
a good air compressor. The air consumption is from 7 cfm to 10.8 on these spray guns. I bought mine from Northern Tool in MN. I only use it for the finish coating. Hal

I will have to look around a little bit. I see HF has HVLP guns ranging from $28.00-$160.00. Thank you for your advice. I plan on buying one in the next few weeks.

I do a fair amount of professional painting.

I have about eight assorted full sized siphon guns and three HVLP gravity feed guns. The only thing I use a siphon gun for anymore is primer.

The first time you use a gravity feed gun, it's startling how much less product you use. One of my gravity feeds is a good Campbell Hausfeld and two are HF loss leaders I got for like $10 each. All do what they're supposed to.

I have a starter HVLP set that I got from Eastwood. I think it about $100 or so. It does a reasonably good job. I am NOT a professional painter, but the results I got with it were satisfactory.

A pro would likely not be satisfied with it because it may not be equal to their skills, but in my case, the cheaper HVLP gun does every bit as good a job as I could do with a much more expensive one.

When you get to the $3-$400 range (SATA), you might find that your skills improve. Mine did, but they are still well below the capability of the gun. As little as I paint, I will probably never catch up. But at least I know the quality of the paint job is not the gun's fault.

I agree with the other guys. i like to use knock off guns. i've got various pressure pot, syphon, and hvlp guns.. Campbel hausfeld makes a decent chinese pressure gun.. in fact.. all my guns are probably chinese. hit a harbor freight store. in many cases you can get guns form 10-30$

I would go the knock-off route again, stop at an auto body shop and see what they are using, then head for Ace Hardware, Lowes, Home Depot and find a similar gun. Most of the knock offs are patterned after the DeVilbis/Binks but made out of cheaper materials (brass/aluminum) and wear out faster, not suitable for professional everyday use but fine for us once a year project guys.
