As always, I appreciate each of your responses.

Domestic load binders are increasingly hard to come by. Made in China, is made in China, no matter where it is purchased.

I have read (and will read again) the WI state regulations, but even if it's not required, I will be binding with four grade 70 chains, each one capable of holding the entire tractor weight.

Thank you,
Glenn F.

Over center binders are most certainly legal up to any weight with in the working load limit of the binder. Despite my caution at HF quality, if the binder says it's good for 9200 WWL then thats what we have to go by.

Sincerely,
Tpr. Bret, your local DOT Trooper.

Brett,
where are you a DOT cop? The Illinois State police are even trying to make life miserable for commercial landscapers saying they need to bind a lawn mower to their trailers, 4 binders on each mower. I guess they are getting bored with the real violators.

They are up to a certain load, but they are required to have something holding the handle in place so it can't swing loose (wire, clip, etc).

I was at our Northern Tool store a few weeks ago, and they had both US and China load binders. The US ones were Columbus McKinnon.. Yes they cost more than the Chink ones, but worth the difference, IMO..

You are 100% correct. I've even shopped for them at genuine truckstops. Not a single one was "made in U.S.A." Might as well buy the least expensive binder you can find.

Harbor freight stuff will work fine, until you get in an accident and someone gets hurt. The thing you have to keep in mind, you get what you pay for, you buy a cheap chain and binder, then ..... .., you fill in the blanks. Is your equipemnt not worth the couple-three hundred dollars you would spend to get good chains and binders?

Just checked. Harbor freight has #70 chain in 5/16", but not in 3/8". 5/16 is rated at up to 4700#. I need at least 3/8".

Got hit going thru an intersection a few years ago. Trailer with 8000 lb skid steer on it (4 chains and HF ratcheting binders holding things down) rolled twice. We released all four ratchets to separate the skid loader from trailer and I am still using them today. Enough force to bend two of the wheels on the tied down skid steer! No straight metal left on trailer.

I have a bunch of them and have not had any problems with them. I like them alot better than the snap over type and won't go back.

Mike, it depends on what you are cinching down. If it has rubber tires, I like the over center binders because you can squish down the tires and the load will stay right there. If the load is a piece of machinery that has no "give" to it, the ratcheting binders are the only to go.

???? You can keep turning that ratchet handle until the tires are squished. I have heard way too many horror stories of pipe handle extensions of people getting knocked in the noggin and of upon releasing the load let loose and fell on them. Way safer to loosen slowly with the ratchet.

Typical HF Chicrap, may or may not work, or even come close to its rated load.
The Federal Govt. and/or State DOT need to make new rules making any use of Chicrap chains, boomers, straps, or other load retaining device illegal.
Those that are too cheap to buy quality product that will perform at their rated capacity, could be fined, or sued, into compliance.

If you are within the weight rating on the side of the binder and it was in good shape I doubt you would get any more grief after an accident than if you had a equally rated high dollar one made in the USA.
