Got a plumbing project on my hands. Went to the nearest big Orange home improvement center. Looking at 1 1/2 PVC fittings and pipe. rounded up my fittings and went to get pipe. The 10 ft lengths of 1 1/2 pipe is stamped 1.50" made by JM company no stamp as to which turd world H hole it is made in....okay. I tried one of the fittings on the end just for kicks and found it to be very loose on the pipe. They had Charlotte brand (made in USA I THINK) short lengths laying across the isle so I tried one of them on the fittings and found it to be a good tight fit. Just to see what the plumbing "expert" of the department would say i called him over. He had dyed spiked hair and some sort of jewelry on I couldn't even bear to look at without wanting to choke him....but....his expert opinion was that noone else had made this observation and if he jammed the fitting on the pipe all the way to the bevel inside it was tight....DUH....He assured me the glue would bond it. I assured him I would buy my pipe at another store and left. Went to big Blue this time and found real spec PVC and bought it.

What in the name of heaven is this country coming to? Maybe I am just paranoid but I swear that the end of this country is near. All tools made in chiina is junk, all the other schlock made there is garbage as well. We are headed for a day when will be totally dependant on the hinese for everything and then when they cut us off....we will be like baby birds sitting here with our mouth open hoping for a worm. I just cannot help believe there is a plan in the works to make us their slave. That 600 dollar "W check" was made possible from a big loan from them. Our dollar that was trading against the Euro at .85 is now at 1.60...the shrinking dollar is the main reason for the high oil price. We have no choice for president...I cannot even say any one of them is better than the other....THEY ARE ALL JOKES. Where are we headed? Sorry for the long wind but I feel like I am seeing the end coming and I am depressed about it.

Matt from CT,

Good post. Always like to see random shouting debunked by facts. :)
As for the other rants against the lack of "experts" at the big box stores: What if that was your son/daughter who just got his/her first job? Give them a break. All of you "experts" who are journeyman plumbers had to be taught how to flux a piece of copper pipe at the beginning of your careers. What I look for is attitude. When I'm standing in the aisle and someone says "can I help you find something?" that means a lot. I don't expect them to know how to size an electrical panel, just what aisle the electrical panels are in. I've even helped a Sears tool salesman convert in-oz to ft-lbs when selling a torque wrench to a customer. Guy thanked me and said he learned something new.
On the other hand, I've gone to an electrical supply house where one of the counterman is the grumpiest, most condescending person you'll ever meet. I dread going in there and having him make it seem like he's doing me a favor even talking to me.

Haven't run into this situation with PVC from those stores yet but I have had a similar problem with their steel pipe fittings. The threads are very irregular and forget about trying to get any of the unions to seal. It's a shame that we now have to inspect pipe fittings before we buy them. Like it isn't tough enough to finish a weekend project already.

Saw the same problem 20 years age with PVC pipe and fittings. Pipe and fittings were made by different manufactures. If we bouht it all made by the same manufacturer it worked just fine.

Hey railhead, I think you're absolutely right. China already holds enough paper on us to bankrupt this country. The only reason they don't do it is because they need this market for their goods. rw

No, they don't.

They hold about 1/5th of it -- 486 Billion. Japan holds 586 Billion, mainly because their economy has been sucking pond water for 15 years so they have to invest somewhere.

Compare that to the $3.1 Trillion ANNUAL federal budget. Take what we normally increase spending by in a year and pay it to China, those bonds are paid off in 2-1/2 years...granted the unions, AARP, and contractors will be bitching when they don't get their cost of living increases...but it's not that much money.

Year after year increases in Defense & Welfare (yes, that includes middle class welfare like social security and medicare) of 15-20% is the troubling thing. Neither contribute materially to the economic output of the country -- they are enabled by economic growth, but they don't create it.

I had the same problem with the pipe fit but did not notice until I went to assemble 50 miles away from that big orange box. had to go to local hardware and buy all over again. Sticking with local stores now but still need to watch out.

I wonder how many others have had the same problem...I live 80 miles away and am glad I checked before I bought. I did buy the fittings i had assembled because thay were all stamped USA and I spent 45 valuable minutes digging them all out but I got my pipe at low"s. It fits tight. I did email home despot, I cannot imagine that I am the only one that saw this. A class action lawsuit could easily come from it. Sorry you lost your gas money finding out their negligence....i feel lucky I didn"t. Low"s is 1 mile from home despot where I was shopping.

We've got a lady, about 50 years old, in our local Lowe's, in the plumbing department, who knows her stuff. I haven't been able to stump her yet. She gives good advice, even if it kills a sale for her.

i will not buy from Home Crapshoot anymore- everything I have bought there has been junk, from lumber to flourescent fixtures to plants. I do shop at Lowes, have found it to be the lesser of two evils.

i understand where you are coming from. it doesnt matter who made it all pipe is going to have some mistake on sizing it might have even been the fitting. but that is just something that happens. i have thrown away whole bundles of pipe before because i thought it was that but it was actually the fitting. it is just something that is going to happen
