Does anybody have experience with the Innova 3100 used to retrieve trouble codes? Are they good for the home mechanic? Thanks. Bob

if getting a low cost scanner i reccomend one that at least gives you real time sensor data as well as codes and code meanings.. i wrote down the sensor values for my vehicles when all is good and then i can compare values when i have a problem. lucas

I have the 3110 and it indicates codes, pending codes, and also gives the coresponding meaning of the code. I am very satisfied with it as it has detected a faulty spark coil, and bad heated EGO sensor, and a bad injector. Don't expect that it will replace the mechanic's knowledge as it will only throw the code for a component that is operating out of it's volatage range. You must have knowledge of the powertrain system including the various components and how they function in the system. For instance a missfire on cylinder #5 could be a bad injector, spark coil, or plug so you need to understand how the system works to understand the code identified by the code reader. I bought it at Amazon for $122 with free shipping. I would buy it again if this one became broken. It is a middle of the road reader with many but not all of the functions of a much more expensive reader but does what I need it to do.

OBTW a missfire on a cylinder could also be a troublesome valve component, leaky coil insulator, low fuel pressure, bad TRIAC in the PCM for the coil or the injector, or any of many other items which could go bad.

Thank you Lucas and Vern. I went ahead and bought one. Went to Wal-Mart and they had them for $98 marked down to $74 so I got it. The package was sealed so it wasn't used. I see many that are all taped up and I think people take them home to read a code then return the unit back to the store. Bob
