O.T. refrigerator

I've got an old refrigerator in my garage that just quit. The fan runs but the compressor doesn't. I hear a click like the compressor is it's trying to start and the fan will slow down a bit then after 30 seconds or so the fan speeds back up and in another minute or so it does the same thing. Are their any tricks I can try to get it running? I doubt it's worth calling a repair guy. I don't want to pay $50 to hear it's junk.

Most likely the starting relay. If you're handy around electricity, directly on the compressor terminals connect one lead of a hot wire to line and the other lead to run, plug in hot wire compressor will hum, short run & start terminals momentarily and compressor will run.

Should be electrical schematic somewhere on refrig if your not familiar with motor leads. Relays can be found generic at any appliance repair place, they may need model & serial nr of the refrig or data on compressor plate.

I've got one little relay that the power goes into. it has 3 wires marked R S and C leaving it going to unmarked terminals on the compressor. I only have a light tester here that is hooked to a hot and neutral but I tested across these 3 and do see current when the relay clicks and fan is running slow. So I know power is getting to the compressor but I don't know to which terminals.

"R" = motor run winding.
"S" = motor start winding.
"C" = motor common (line).
You may have a starting capactor also, probably not but check the schematic.

The click you hear is the overload. It is a bi-metal that heats and opens the circuit when the current is too high for a given period. The fan runs slow as the compressor motor is failing to start and fast when the overload heats and has opened the circuit to the compressor motor.

You need both the run and the start windings in the circuit with common to start the compressor motor. Once the compressor motor starts running, the back EMF builds up in the windings and the current drops. When the relay current drops, it disconnects the start winding and the compressor motor continues to run on the run winding.

The only function of the relay is to bridge the compressor motor start winding to the run winding so both windings are available for starting and then disconnect the start winding when the compressor motor is running.

Typically when a relay fails, the start winding is not in the circuit and the compressor motor is trying to start on the run winding only, not going to happen, O/L heats and clicks open.

The O/L may be in the relay or it may be mounted separately on the motor compressor shell. If the relay is replaced, the O/L should be renewed also.

If you can't figure out how to safely hot wire the motor from my 2 posts please just take the old relay and O/L to any appliance vendor and buy new (check for starting capacitor also). Can't be more than $15 - $20. In the early 80's a box of a dozen relays and O/L's was $15 wholesale, sold for $3 - $4 each. If it doesn't work on the new parts, junk it.

There is only the one little box between the line and the compressor. The wires are crimped going into it and can't be detached without cutting them. The pigtails comming out of the box attach to terminals on the compressor in a way that they can be removed. From your description I think I should take the wires loose from the compressor and then check to see that I'm getting current across R to C and S to C.

Another alternative would be get another cord and crimp ends onto it attaching the hot to R and the neutral to C on the compressor then short R to S on the compressor and see if it starts.

Yes Chris, your last para is correct. That is a hot wire check.

One hot conductor to R. The other hot conductor to C. Momentarily touch S to R until the compressor motor runs. The motor will run until you unplug the hot wire. After stopping do not attempt to restart for about 20 minutes, allow the refrigerant pressure differential to equalize before restart.

Your compressor motor probably has post type terminals. Very hard to crimp connector satisfactory without damaging post. Can you use the existing short wires from the relay to the compressor motor for testing? Alligator clips will work ok on stranded wire or its terminal connectors but don't try using them on the compressor motor terminals, will surely arc and destroy the post. Better to cut those wires if you have to, use them for testing and splice them when done if necessary.

Add this, if you are going to run the compressor motor on a hot wire you will not have power to the fan motor to condense the refrigerant so 1 - 2 minute run time max. The actual start and then continue to run when the S wire is disconnected is what you need to see.

BTW that box type relay is generically called a "hot wire relay" as opposed to a solenoid or a magnetic relay.

I looked at one for a guy last year that the Sears repairman said was junk. Turned out there was a mouse stuck in the compresser pulley not allowing it to turn. Pulled the mouse out and voila runs like new again. Hope your fix is this easy.

Most "fridge problems are electrical and the part that would fail here is the little solenoid-type switch that plugs onto the compressor.
If that is fine, it could be a compressor problem - either the start winding is burnt out, or the pistons are siezed. Either will cycle the thermal overload. Since the fan slows, the unit must be drawing power and there"s a chance it"s just seized and you might be able to get a little more use from it.
Set the end of a short 2x4 against the compressor and when it tries to start, give it a sharp whack with a hammer. If a couple such jolts don"t free it up,the end result is the same as a burnt out unit - trash.
