Lincoln 225AC welder

I am looking at a used Lincoln 225AC welder that looks to be in very good condition. The only problem was that the selector knob that selects the welding amperage moved very hard. The man said it had been sitting a while and he would look at it and call me back. He called and said contacts were dirty and he lubricated them and now it works very smooth. He guarantees it for 30 days. Asking $100. I can't test it there because he doesn't have the correct 220 plug-in. Does this all sound reasonable. The person is local and seems honest. I don't know enough about the internal workings of this welder, I just know I have seen a lot of these old welders around and they always seem to work.

I have had one for 34 years have had to replace ends on leads a few times but other than that is still going . I think I give $50 for mine used back then so $100 Would be a good price .

couple weeks ago I gave 100 bucks for an older 225 lincoln. Had 60 ft of cable on the hot side and 20 ft on the ground.
don't believe I "stole" it but doubt I will see another deal like that anytime soon

I have one myself and those things are pretty near bullet proof. The selector knob getting tight is pretty normal when they sit. Might get's tight if I don't use it for a while but frees right up after a little use. Sounds like a good deal.

My first welder was a Lincoln 225 AC that held up like a trooper for many years. I would have it hot enough to start stinking many times and it kept on going. The selector switch did finally quit making contact, but I'm thinking a lesser welder would have quit long before that. Jim

I have had a few of these and more other older Lincoln Welders with the nylon? plastic? selector knob....PULL it out before you try to turn it and it will turn easier and not strip out. 100 for one is less than scrap price now. I would buy it. Best of luck.

A new one costs about 250,so 100 is not that bad.It will weld 6011 real good,and 1/8 jet rod(7024 is jet rod).If you can weld good,you can weld with 7018.It gets a little aggravating until you get used to it because it just stops burning on AC about the time you dont want it to.There is AC 7018,works alright and there is 7014.There is a lot you can do with a welder like that.I built my shop with a 180 Lincoln welder and 6011 and square tubing and barn metal.It changes amps real hard,need to take apart and fix my switch,but always got by with moving switch through the ranges a couple of times.I have to kick it now and then to get the fan to quit squealing.It was made in the 60s.I dont remember ever taking it apart myself and Ive had it since 1986.Fan squealed about the first time I used it and a kick fixed it.I have welded lots of stuff with it,but I got a Mig about 10 years ago and use the Mig more nowdays because I like it and weld lots of thin stuff it seems like.I have about 100 foot of cable on mine and use it all day long once in a while,so I dont have any complaints.By the time you buy a roll of wire and a tank of CO2 for a Mig you would have close to 100 dollars in just that.A 10LB box of 6011 cost me 7 dollars the other day at an auto parts store and I can weld lots of stuff with that.AC/DC welders are nice,but cost a lot unless you can find a used one.Lincoln pipeliners are great too,but gas at 3.50 a gallon makes it better for now to use a buzz box.

I had a fan go out on an old Craftsman welder. I had just bought a new fan, when my young son took apart a yardsale can opener that his mom had bought for a dollar. It had the exact same motor in it as the welder fan. . .

JFYI a lot of fans from eclectic heater etc are all the same. Pretty much a common fan motor used it lots of stuff BTDT many times. Even some of the old record players used the same type motor

My lincoln 225 uses a 230 volt motor.Oil the bushings if it gets noisy.

In the day that was new price for one, but now days that is a bargain. Yep sounds about right for one as far as the amp switch they do get sticky some times. I own one and have for 20 years or so. There bullet proof as long as the fan runs and you do what little TLC they need. So yes $100 is dirt cheap for one. Most auction I see them at they go for $175-300. Not as nice a rig as the AC/DC machines but for most things they work just fine

You're limited with just AC . Buy yourself an AC/DC & be glad you did . You have more variety with DC . Good luck & God bless, Ken

The switch contacts oxidize when the welders a re kept in damp buildings.A bit of Lubriplate grease on the switch shaft will help.

I fixed one for a friend that the selector was locked up on. I took it apart, cleaned the contacts and put electrical grease on them, lubed the plastic shaft with silicone. It also had 3 of the leads from the transformer to the selector switch fried. Spliced in new leads bigger than the old ones and soldered well.

The poor old abused welder has worked fine for about 4 years since then.

I've had one for 35 or so years. Replaced the electrode holder. No other problems. Price sounds good.
