how do i keep birds out of my barn? do those plastic owls work? what about those expensive things that make a sound of a bird in distress every 5 minutes or so? thanks for your time.

Bob is right; start up an older diesel and let it run for 15 to 20 minutes in the barn. Birds will not go in and stay for at least 6 months.

A neighbor of mine closes them in the barn and vents anhydrous ammonia inside for a few minutes. It kills anything that breaths in a confined area. I have inhaled a whiff of it accidentally and it is nasty stuff, but dissipates quickly.

Start up your diesel tractor in the barn and let it run for a couple of minutes. Close the door and the birds will all leave and not want to roost or nest there.

Take a double strand wire like for boat trailers etc. put a 110 volt male plug on one end and wire nut the other ends. Now take a very sharp utilty knife and cut the insulation on the hot side facing away fron the other nuteral wire. Skin off a 1/4" and then move down the wire a 1/4" and do the same on the nuteral wire. Go back and forth the whole distance of said wire. Do nothing on both ends and tie them making a long perch.

liability exclusion note! NEVER plug it into a 110 volt outlet with a circut breaker. And if it was say a couple feet away from a 20ft eve spout filled with ground feed. But if you do remember dead birds can start fires on the floor.

Rid-A-Bird wick perches, using 9.4% endrin or 11% fenthion, may be used on a variety of structures for control of house sparrows, starlings, and pigeons. Installations take advantage of a bird's propensity to perch briefly before feeding or entering roost or nesting structures. Applications may be made to a variety of structures but are restricted from food storage or preparation areas.

What animals do you keep? Would a weasel or ferret be a bad thing to have around? They'd keep the barn clean of and eggs and babie birds, mice, etc. Black snakes???

Barn swallows move into my barn every spring.They will fly close around my head in the yard to get me to open the barn doors.Birds have been nesting in barns since the first barn was built.I wonder what barn swallows nested in before there were barns.Swallows fly over the garden catching bugs so I leave them alone.I have 2 bird houses on my shop that have birds in them every year.I have a recipe for black bird pie in an old Home Comfort cook book.Pigeons will make good pies when the oil co takes your last buck for heating oil or propane.Natural gas has 1ncreased 93% in the last year.Pigeons come and go here.A 177 pellet gun that shoots a pellet at 1000 per second make a good pigeon gun.People in the heating oil business expect 5.00 oil by September. Gasoline will follow...

We never had pigeons round here much when I was growing up,but back in high school I stayed at a buddy's house one night,and about midnight he went and got a flashlight,and he asked if I wanted to go "pigeon giggin"Well I asked him,What the hell is pigeon giggin?,so for the barn we headed with a Big Maglight and a frogging gig with a long stick and a rope attached to it.Turnrd out to be one of the most fun nights I ever spent in a barn loft,and the hunt was successful.Just shine the light on'em,take aim,and throw the gig at'em.We killed a few and had a ton of fun.

What I use at the run in for the animals is strips of plastic floor runner, clear, to make a curtain that the animals will go thru, but the birds will not. It has worked real good for me. This way the animals can go in and out, but the birds stay out.

Dog trainers use lots of pigeons. Contact one in your area about live-trapping them.

Be careful with those barn cats....we had 3 in NC. One of them got hit in the head by a truck radiator fan blade as a kitten. That boy is dumb as a sack of door knobs....but he must have some sense - he managed to promote himself to "House Cat 1/C"....
Yeah, he's still with us here in WV and still dumb as dirt...but he's amusing....best mouser I've ever seen, too, but the boy just ain't real bright...but he ain't a barn cat any more....

I used to shoot them with a 22 rifle with bird shot in the barn. You have to aim rite at them but you won't break any windows. Works best on larger birds like pigeons.

I invested some money in a Benelli Supernova 12 gauge shotgun. Works great for trap shooting, hunting, and annoying bird removal. Just use some light target/trap loads. I have somewhere in my stash of lead for reloading a bag or two of no. 12 shot, I used to use it for shooting in tight quarters because it"ll kill the bird, but won"t pierce a roof or wall.

I've got boxes mounted in each end of the barn gable, one end has a family of owls and the other has a family of little falcons about the size of cooper's hawks. no nuisance birds, no rats, and very few mice. You'd have to make some adjustments if you have small animals running loose (chicks, baby rabbits, ducks, etc.

i put box's of moth balls in some plastic planters with holes on my 30x50 in the rafters corners . it seemed to keep em out.lucas

The distress things work to attract hawks to kill off your birds for you. We've been battling pigeons for the last 5 years at my sisters place. The renters feed their horse in the field and the spilled grain is fuelling the population. Can't convince them to feed using a more efficient method.

Have been shooting the pigeons, smashing nests and eggs, chicken wire on openings to roosting spots etc. Still a flock of about 50.
