I can't find the serial number on a Ford 2000 3-cyl we recently purchased at an auction. We've been told to look on the transmission, but it is not there. We aren't sure of the year and need a manual. Can anyone help?

Go to these web pages for the location and to decipher the date code and other codes.

Right side (where the s/n of the entire tractor is)

Link

Left side (where other info is found)

Link

It is on a horizontal flat, milled surface, usually a half round milled flat, behind the starter on the bellhousing, RH side.

I have a 1967 model 2000 3 cyl gas model.

Unless it's been eaten by battery acid, the serial, model, and unit numbers are on the front edge of the transmission housing (bellhousing, clutch housing), just above and aft of the starter - right side on a '65 or newer Ford. There is, or was, a sticker with these and more numbers, under the right side of the hood. Open it as if you were going to check the battery, and it should be right above the battery.

I have a 4500 Ford backhoe, probably a similar era- and the numbers are on the clutch housing casting where the rear of engine bolts to it- check on either side. Lots of number- build date is part of it.
