Impact Ratchets

Impact ratchet tools...I don't mean the pistol type impact wrenches; how many foot pounds of pressure should a 3/8" one have in order to be usefull?

I understand such impact wrenches would be used more for assembly/speed work than for getting tough bolts loose/tight. Am I correct in this?

Lanse is talking air guns, not ratchets...you'll rarely see a 1/2 air ratchet. Glen, I use air ratchets daily and I can tell you that I find very little difference between the best and the worst. In my box right now there are 3 in a 3/8 drive- and my "go to" is a cheap a$$ 9.99 Sears "companion" brand ( cheaper than the craftsman line). It's pretty compact, and i figure every bolt i tighten with it saves wear and tear on my IR stuff. It ain't broke in 3 years of everyday use.

i have a crfatsman half incher, and i use if for almost everything. Its great

We covered this topic awhile back, anyway a 3/8 drive ingersol rand is a very good choice. About
65# torque and that is enough to hurt your knuckles. You use the wrench as a ratchet to losen the bolt then you spinn it off or on. It one of the best air wratchet you can buy, mine is at least 20 years old.

10 years ago I bought an Ingersol-Rand 107 3/8air wratchet with 60 lbs torque. A couple of years later Chicago Pneumatic came out with one that was supposed to be 130 lbs and I bought it. The IR will remove anything that the CP will tighten with no effort and visa-versa. I rarely use either one. Alot of guys that I work with use them daily. It is mainly just your preferance. I repair class 8 trucks and only use the air ratchets for removing fan blades from clutches and valve cover bolts. My 2 cent, Rick

Are you talking about pneumatic ratchets? And foot pounts of TORQUE? In that case 60 ft# is plenty for a 3/8 drive. And yes, you don't loosen bolts with them, just spin them in and out.
