the seriel # is WD239704GA does anyone know what year it is? and how to go about adjusting the timming on a 4 cyl gas with distributor Thank you

To adjust the timing, loosen and rotate the distributor- just like on a car.

I think you"re looking at the engine serial number, since it ends in GA. That stands for gas. The tractor serial number is on the left rear vertical face of the differential, and starts with WD, followed only by numbers. 146607 and higher is a WD45.

If the engine is original to the tractor, it is a 1950 WD. As stated above, the "tractor" serial number will be found on the LH vertical surface of the differential just below the brake spring hole and above the brake adjusting bolt/locknut.
If it is a 1950, the serial number will be WD35445 to WD72327. I own a 1950 WD with tractor Ser. #WD66400 and engine Ser.#WD272805GA.
