There is no mistaking a Morel, once you see them.
our family has been eating them since about 1809.

Nobody has died yet, but several of the family are "a bit touched"!! Just kidding. Morels are 99.9% safe.

Now the red mushrooms that come on early, they are a little dicey if you have never had them. Experts say to eat just a little at first.

Gene

PS not finding any yet here in central MO.

Rick,
Where are u in SE Ohio? I grew up in Meigs county on the bank of the Ohio. Now live in Madison county Iowa. Similar hills to SE Ohio. A few years ago my wife found a patch about 15 yards from our back deck. Got more than 2 5 gal buckets full-all were 6-8 inches high. Haven't been out this year yet as I'm on crutches from some surgery. Maybe next week..... ....

can you send a picture of the kind you pick? How do you tell a "good" one from a poison one?
Also: anyone had any luck hunting wild Gin Seng?
i supposedly live in a great area for this stuff- but I'll be damned if I've ever seen any!

Google morrells. Look at the pictures and get the image locked in your head. Here in Iowa we have mostly grey and dirty yellow morrells. Once you go out and find a few you will know what they are-nothing else looks like a morrell. If you find a bunch of mushrooms growing on a downed log or on a stump-they are not morrells. Generaly when you find one morell you find more in that close area. There are no mushrooms that grow in groups that even look like morrells. (You can eat those puff balls that grow in your yard too-pick them BEFORE they get big. If they are not white and firm all the way through don't eat them they taste like the white button muchrooms in the store) Here's the best tip for finding mushrooms-look for a dead elm tree that has the bark still attached. Morrells grow in circles around the base of these trees because of the nutrients put out by the tree. Here's another tip-dip in beaten egg and roll in Ritz cracker crumbs, fry ---or just saute in butter..... ...wow

taken off the internet:
How many poisonous mushrooms are there?
In the United States, there are about 5,000 types of mushrooms. Of these, about 100 are responsible for most of the cases of mushroom poisoning. Less than a dozen species are considered deadly. However, death from other species, even so-called "safe" mushrooms, has occurred in very young children or in very ill adults.

Around here most people look for morrells, but if the property owner knows where a patch is he gets pretty mad if someone else gets there first

Hi jose,

From what I've read, there's only one posionous mushroom in the USA, Aremadia???(sp), and looks like it has cancer bumps on the surface. Very easy too spot once you've seen a pic of it.

We say that and there will always be someone get sick from a mushroom of some type. A lady(who I trust) told me her PHD said to take a small piece of mushroom and place it under the tongue. If you have any effects from that small tasting, then you shouldn't eat it, don't matter what it is.

When we talked about different kinds of mushrooms other than the regular morels, had an old friend that always said he always liked to talk to a feller that had ate one. before he tried it.
