What's the best pressure washer for cleaning a tractor in the $400 range?

Thinking of a gas powered Briggs engine (never have much luck with a Tecumseh, Honda costs to much)type with a pump in the area of 2500 PSI at about 2.5 GPM. This gives a 6,250 units of cleaning power.

Looking for suggestions about the brand of pump, wand, hose, and any other accessories that might be nice to have.

Anyone ever use a air nozzel pressure washer? I've seen one advertised (about $30) that connects to air hose and will suck up a soap solution which it sprays onto the item to be cleaned. Don't think you could get any higher pressure than the air compressor can put out (about 100 PSI). Not sure this would clean much grease.

Thanks

I bought a used Steam Cleaner for $800. This one puts out 3,000 psi and 3.0 gallons per minute. Hot to steam but hot water works the best as steam tends to bake it on. This one needs 220 volt but there are used ones that will run on 110 and do almost as good. Look in the yellow pages where you live and call up some steam cleaning sales companies. They usually have used ones for sale that have a lot of life left in them. The one I got looks like brand new and works just as good (even though I don't use it much).
Hope this helps..

I too LOVE toys but collecting them leaves few $ for other things. I have a 2.5 gal per minute 2250psi washer I got from Cheapo Depot..Home Depot.. Use it regularly. Secret to long life? I don't run any harsh cleaning agents through the pump. Nothing more than car wash. How do I get the 30 year old grease off? I use a spray bottle filled with my favorite degreaser full strength to wet the project. I leave it set a few minutes & then pressure wash. Using common sense with flammables in a pinch kereosene or even gasoline works well. Before anyone jumps on the pollution factor using gas or kero, the stuff your washing off has more nasty heavy metals & chemicals than the gas or kero leaves to soak into the ground. The most recent project was a 60's Ford truck with a Marmon Herrington conversion. Well maintained/HEAVILY greased. Sprayed the frame & drivetrain with degreaser from the spray bottle till good & wet. Pressure washed it with my happy homeowner grade pressure washer & it was ready to paint when dry. 30 years of grease came right off. I believe I have well over 200 hours run time on that low buck washer & she's still perking good....

400.00 dollars will only get you a piece
of junk. when it comes to power washers for
cleaning tractors you should get one with hot
steam capabilities and about 3500 psi, this
will clean or stip any thing, over the years
i have found that most cleaning sysems under
2000.00 have a short life span, i am speaking
from experience.

I have a Briggs powered Generac with 2250 and 4Gpm. I got it on the net for about 300.00 plus shipping a couple of years ago. This is an I/C motor with overhead valve, and starts easily and runs nice. The key to cleaning grease off my tractors was to get a 'Power Nozzle'. NorthernTool has them, and Fleet Farm (kit with quick disconnect and asst nozzles was 70 bucks). This nozzle will not only take off grease, but also strips paint off wood buildings very well. I was not happy with the washer until I got it. Get high pressure hose with it, though, as it pulsates and will wreck the 2250psi hose that comes with cheaper washers. The sprayers for compressed air are o.k. for applying solvents at low pressure, otherwise, they just suck. (get it?)

IMHO-The seals on tractors aren't made to withstand the water pressure. You will blow water into every exposed seal and the components it protects unless you're better with a HP washer than I.

The nozzles that use water and an air compressor for power aren't worth much. Won't do the job!

I have a 5.5 hp Honda on my log splitter. I have the same engine on my lawn thatcher I tow behind my little JD 445 tractor. Both of these engines are incredibly easy to start, run well, run quietly, and run clean. I paid extra money to have these engines on the machines and have never regretted it. It has been my experience that these Honda engines start easier, run better, and are more trouble free than any Briggs, Kohler, or Tecumseh I have used or owned. For myself, in looking for a pressure washer I want one equipped with a Honda engine.

I have a 5.5Hp Honda on a washer rated at 2200psi and 3gpm. Does a teriffic job. Am very happy with the Honda - one terrific engine, starts easily, runs well, economical on fuel. One point, that needs to be considered, high pressure with little water flow is useless. Best choose a washer with at least 3gpm or more. Wish I could have afforded the next larger model, but this one does almost everything I need, and that includes cages and dropping pans for about a hundered bunnies. As far as I am concerned the Honda is a top notch engine, but yes, I have to choke it to start.

I bought one in the $600 range recently at Lowe's, a 2500psi 3gpm Generac powered by a 6.5hp Honda.

I'm not a pressure washer expert but I do like mine. It'll strip the bark off an oak tree in 1/2 a second at four feet with the 0 degree nozzle. I'm pretty sure it could double as a bush hog or chainsaw in a pinch.

But I'd like to echo the praise others have made for the Honda engines. My generator has one and I was so happy with it that I made sure when I bought the pressure washer that it ran on a Honda.

One pull and it starts no matter how long it has been sitting. They've done something to kill the compression until its running on its own, so the pull is nearly effortless. It is also substantially quieter than other small engines.

And besides, it's the same color as my '49 Cub.

I picked up a DeVilbiss washer at Homer Depot this summer, it was in the $400 range as I recall. I think it is 2.2 gpm at 2400 psi. Has a Honda engine, generic (non-CAT) pump. Seems to clean pretty well. Of course you can spend a lot more and get better performance and probably longer life, but for my purposes it should work out okay. Since it doesn't have hot water capability I spray heavy grease with oven cleaner and let it sit overnight before pressure washing. Just de-greased a Farmall A with it and there was only a few little spots where the grease was stubborn and had to be cleaned off with a brush.

I tried one of those air siphon cleaners, and I found it to be most useful for cleaning inside things like transmission housings, things too big for a parts washer or which you might want to clean them up without taking them off the tractor. Be very careful using them with flammable solvents, though. You are spraying a real good fuel-air mixture and you want to be darn sure you don't have any sparks, hot metal or open flame nearby.

Also, your comment about Honda engines doesn't seem to include the fact that Honda engines are, by far, the least expensive engines you can buy, based on life cycle cost. The purchase price is only a small part of the total cost. A Honda is likely to last far longer than 3-4 of most other engines. So the issue really is, how much are you going to spend over the life of the unit? The same thing applies to CAT pumps. The purchase price is high but the life cycle cost is very low. This is precisely why they are used in many commercial applications.

I agree about the quality and longevity of Honda engines- but in a hobby situation, where it probably won't get a lot of use anyhow, sometimes you have to either go cheaper or not at all.

I must be alone here, I'm not impressed with the Honda engine on my pressure washer. It always starts, but needs choke and several pulls. The Tecumseh on my chipper-shredder needs choke, too, but always starts first pull. I'm hoping the Honda gets better with age.

I agree about the Honda engines. This spring our fertilizer dealer brought us two 1,000 gallon nurse tanks with new 5.5 hp engines and pumps. One tank had a Honda and the other a Briggs. If the Honda didn't start on the first pull it was because you forgot to turn the shut off switch to "on", never did use the choke. The Briggs would never start without the choke and took several pulls to start. I wouldn't buy anything but a Honda after using both side by side.

Cliff, you made my day. I can't wait until my wife gets home so I can tell her. You see, we have a garden tiller with the 5.5 hp Honda. She uses it all the time. One day I happened to notice her start it cold. She didn't use the choke. I asked why. She said she never had as she has never needed to!

Yesterday I purchased and Excel pressure washer with a 6 hp Honda. It was the Premium model which is one step below the commercial version and is exactly in the price range with 2400 psi on the pressure. As for cleaning ability, I know it will require slovent degreasers and a lot of energy to get reults, however a commercial truck washing company with hot water and chemicals could not remove caked grease from my JD A. A steam cleaning system is best, but they require a lot of maintenance and attention
