Stopped by a local consignment sale location this evening on the way home from work just to see what's available. Sale is Saturday. I spotted a used torch outfit. The tanks, (not sure of their volume, but the oxygen tank was about 4'� high and the acetylene tank a foot or so shorter). Both tanks are equipped with what appeared to be good gauges (Airco brand). Not much gas in the tanks. The set is complete with about 20-30 foot of hoses in good shape and the torch head has what I think is a cutting tip. No other tips are included. I could not identify what make of torch it was, but it appears to be in good condition. No manufactures name was visible. Tanks are chained to a typical two wheel dolly. I have two questions. 1. What would a set like this be worth approximately? and 2. I've followed some of the past posts on YT regarding tank ownership. If I get a bill of sale from the auctioneer,am I going to have any problem getting the tanks filled locally? The tanks are stamped with Virginia Highway Department. I am in south central PA. There's also stickers on the tanks indicating that they were serviced by a welding supply outlet in McConnellsburg, PA which is about an hour away from me. So it looks like these tanks have been around. Any advice is appreciated.

Heres what I would do. Call the place you will have them filled/exchanged. Tell them what size(How tall). They will know the volume by size or should. Also tell them what it says on them. They will then say ya or na on filling them.

How much is it worth?

I have a little over $400 in my entire setup including tank ownership and cart.All bought new.

Hi Brad,

How in the world did you manage that? Eighteen months ago I bought tanks holding 200 cu ft of O2, same size CO2 (though CO2 is sold by weight rather than volume), and 125 cu ft of acetylene. As a favor from a neighbor who is an Airgas employee I was allowed to buy the tanks and gases at the employee price. Altogether it came to $558. Without the CO2 it would have been about $200 less---still not leaving enough of $400 to buy torches, hoses, regulators, and a cart.

Hey Stan,I use LP instead of acetylene.I really can"t tell the difference between the two gasses when cutting heavy metal.ALL the scrapper guys around here use LP.

Paid a good friend 50 bucks to build me a cart after I commented on how nice his was.Heck,I couldn"t have done a nicer job!

I think the tanks NEED to be stamped SOLD for them to be yours if you buy them.

I would want to see the paperwork where VA DOT sold or surplussed the tanks. If not, and they are 'hot' nothing like a bill of sale to seal a conviction for receiving stolen property.

I paid 350 for a good set of Smith's gages, hoses, cutting and brazing tips, 300 each for the tanks (full) and 100 for the cart all new.

I would start with a letter and numbers on tanks to Virginia Hwy. Dept. Last thing you want are really HOTT! tanks. I'm known for being cheap, but I probably would like to see them for $200, if they are legit. Fire em up, check em out. No reason not to.

P.s. also check date inspected code on tanks. Reinspection and pressure testing is not real cheap. They could fail test, also. Get info from place that would refill.

It might be an Airco torch. I think someone else is making a similar torch to Airco as well. Tanks can last a very long time but you need to make sure the tanks can be sold and also refilled. If they are leased tanks and you take them back, they will keep them. Dave
