I am a graduating senior and i am heading to a vo-tech. I need to order some tools for school and I was hoping for a little debate on some good brands. Snap-on, Matco, Craftsman the goods and the bads????

My son has a 1/2 inch Craftman Rachet that I purchase as teenager back after the war in the 1940's. It has always been used on a farm we have never been afraid to put a cheater on it. It is a brute to work with has it is so heavy. gitrib

Hello rockchalk
We had Matco tool boxes as part of the fee our students payed for the classes.
You may want to check and see if you vo-tach offers the same package. I would not spend to much now on tools, buy just enough to get by.
There is plenty of time to buy tools and there are lots of them out there. So wait untill you know your needs first, and then you will know what to buy.
Guido.

i really like MATCO tools as well. I have quite a few of them besides my NAPA tools. They make great stuff.

My suggestion is this. I have good tools as well, I usually buy NAPA because they have good service down the road and stand behind their products. But I have accumlated alot of tools by going to garage sales and estate sales. I have picked up good screwdrivers and etc for pennies.... Helps build up some tools and it is always good to have a back up.

The school might have a deal with Snap-on.Start with all Craftsman. Then as you learn buy off the Snap-on truck[just my opinion there are plenty other brands]As you build your truck collection up bring your Craftsman home for use and sidejobs.Get the cheapest large box.The box does not turn nuts and bolts and is storage.Hit every garage and yard sale you can also. Youll see some bargains.Whatever you start with from a truck dont mix half Mac and Snap-on etc.Stick to one truck dealer only. The Snap-on has flank drive six point sockets patented.Buying out someone like a service manager who wants to sell all his Snap-on may be cheaper.Dont listen to sales pitch of truck dealers to get young guys to buy stuff they dont need.Dont owe him too much in case you get layed off.I guess Im pushing Snap-on but I paid dearly.Whatever stick to USA made.Good Luck in school and please call yourself a mechanic not a tech.

Wait until you attend, you will receive all the information and deals on tools. You could spend a lot of money on things you don't need if you jump the gun. Don't worry about what the guy next to you has in his box either, it's not a contest.

I like True Value tools. I agree with the post already about not getting a lot of money tied up until you actually start or are 110% sure you are going into that line of work.

Rockchalk

With that name I am going out a limb here and assume you around the city of Lawrence, KS. My youngest brother went to school in Beloit, he is now a service manager for Heritage Equip. in Baldwin City. As far as buying tools you might stop by and talk with him, his name is Lawrence Johnson. There are many companies that offer lifetime warranties now and they are much cheaper than Snap-On or Craftsman. Good luck in school.

In MN the vo-tech"s have a purchasing day shortly before school starts. Good discounts, and they list everything needed for whatever courses you sign up for. Sounds like sensible planning by school officials- don"t others do the same? Should be a head"s up for your state.

Wait until you are enrolled in the Votech program to buy your tools. All of the tool truck brands plus others offer huge discount (50% off of list) programs to enrolled students.
I wouldn't spend alot of money until you're sure you really want to pursue this line of work.

most votecs have a very good tool purchasing program to the point you cant afford to purchase before entering school they should have list of the needed tools at a deep reduction to students

Try to buy USA made, I know its tough to find but if you try to buy used, like a guy retiring or something you might be okay. Try proto too. Are you going to Vo tech for Diesel mechanic.?

I am going for Agricutural Mechanics, I live in a farming commuity and in the surrounding towns there are probably a dozen implement dealers and tractor repair shops
