How many 4 foot Lite can ya run on one circuit and one switch. I may know tractors and there electric system but here i know just enough to be dangerous . This getting old and can't see makes for a need for more lites down in the grouch cave for the wood working . As of now there are 6 4 footers and want to add two more But got thinking best check with more knowledgable experts on house wiring.

The wattage limit is based on the size wire and breaker. You want to do it according to code or you could have problems when you sell it and it gets inspected. #14 wire shouldn't have more than a 15 amp breaker or it can get hot(and then start a fire). 120x15=1800 watts. #12 wire can have a 20 amp breaker or it can get hot. 120x20=2400 watts. Just add all your wattages. Of course, the NEC has a large safety factor built in for wire and then electricians try to limit circuits to 20% less than the above calculations. They usually figure about 1500 watts for a 15 amp circuit on #14 wire. If I wire anything, I automatically put in #12 wire. Keep in mind the effect of any motor startup amperage and don't let the wife run her hair dryer on a loaded circuit or the breaker will blow.

If it is a commercial building, then circuit design is more specifically based upon the loads on the circuit.

Just put them in your nowhere near the max even with old ballasts.New electronic ballasts even more.Each ballast is likely under one amp and you can load up a twenty amp circ, to 16 amps.Like Steve said below amperage is on the ballasts then just use addition to find max load.[16 amps].Now if the circuit[breaker] is 15 amps,14awg wire then load up to only 12 amps max.

I think I've got at least nine of the double 4 footers wired into just one circuit.

How many watts are each of the fixtures? You can run about 1600 watts per circuit, or 16 fixtures with 100 watts each. remember that Volts X Amps = watts. 120vac X 12amps = 1,400 watts.

Each lamp ballast should have an amperage rating on it. Like .85 amp or somethig like that.
Add these amp rating untill you come to a total of for #12 wire about 15 amp and figure the # of lights you can have. Also take into any consideration any other loads you may have on that circuit.
