Kiltz Paint

Wondered if anyone knew anything about the Kiltz paint. Need to paint in an old farm house with about 40 years of an unvented gas heater and nicotine on the walls and ceilings. Have washed with mild detergent (dawn) and warm water. Does the Kiltz paint actually have a Kiltz base or would I still need to prime. Thanks for any help.

I have used both their paint and primer. I have to agree about the latex version of the primer- It does not work anywhere near as well as the oil based Kilz primer.

I have also used the Zinzer primer mentioned below It works fine also.

I do like their paints but I always prime first.

I have used the Kilz primer over pressure treated plywood and then coated it with exterior latex. Still looks good. Hal

I have used it some, but I found that Do-It-Best stores have a primer that works just as good at half the price. In my opinion (which isn't worth a lot) you are just buying a brand name.

Do not use kilz outside!!
Oil based inside, may need 2 coats if stain is bad.

if you use kiltz use the kiltz original which is oil based if stain is really bad use pigmented shelliac which is alcohol base u can get both at any paint store.

Mike,
Quite a few years ago I caught a car on fire in my garage. Although I got the fire out fairly quickly, the smoke damage was very heavy. The garage was finished with sheetrock that had not been taped or painted and was over 20 years old when this happened. I purchased a product from Zinsser and after just one quick roll on coat for the ceiling and walls it was ready to paint. I never realized how dark that garage was prior to the smoke damage that caused me to paint. I could almost work out there without lights after that. I think I bought the Zinsser at Home Depot and although it wasn't cheap it worked perfectly for me. A word of caution though, plenty of ventilation. The stuff really stinks. Oh, and be sure and have the proper stuff for clean up too. Plain old paint thinner wouldn't clean up the floor, seems like I had to use lacquer thinner which is another nasty odor.
The image below may not be what I used, as I recall it was a lacquer base instead of oil.

Use the shellac based Kilz primer, not the water based. Water based will look ok until it dries, then the stain will migrate through the paint. After the 6th coat it was still happening and then used the solvent based primer.

I'd prime it first!! Ii think they make a primer to cover old construction so I'd check it out...Try their web site? Google iy...

I think they have a product that's suppose to be a combination primer and paint. That might be worth asking about at the store to save some work?
