Eaton 2 speed axle control

I have two types of axle controls one is electric the other is electric over air.I'm doing some rear axle work and can use either as they interchange.Its on a older Dodge dump with air brakes and 2 speed rear.Anyone know which control is better? Thanks, Jack

I'd go with electric. If a wire broke while on the road, you can splice, and tape it temporarily. If an air line breaks, you will need couplers to splice it together. Who carries air line parts with them while on the road. I never did when I was driving transports. I always had a few rolls of electrical tape in the tool box.

my vote is for electric shift also. even if air shift motor is a lot simpler. i've broken units trying to get them apart to replace diaphram. aluminum gets rotton inside from moisture. besides that, some air systems use electric solinoid valves to direct air--more to deal with. paul

Hello jack12345.
Go with the electric system. It is easier to service and in cold weather is definately better.
The air system works fine only if the air supply is clean and dry.

I've seen both types quickly destroyed by bad (untrained) drivers. Unless you're the only person that is going to drive the truck, I'd go with whichever is easier for you to repair. As I remember. the mechanics where I worked seemed to get the all-electrics back on the road quicker.
