I'm interested in making decorative iron railings, etc. One machine i need that I've been told to build is a picket twister for the uprights. I've figured out the basic machine;how do I make it count or time the twists,to turn itself off? Are there any sites on machinery like this?

Carl, another site to try is Anvilfire. loads of blacksmithing links. A fellow I know has built one of those twisters, steel frame, vise, to hold the far end of the iron, and a large truck steering wheel on the input shaft of an old truck four speed transmission, chunk the iron into the output shaft, which is fitted with a large chuck, turn the steering wheel. larger steel, drop it down a gear. Sounds like you want something almost automatic, if so, search around large fabrication plant for cast offs. John in Ne.

Try www.keenjunk.com a board for Blacksmiths, with some of the most knowledgable fellows around in terms of iron.
