Lawn Mower Engine Knocking and Smoking?

I have a Craftsman 4.5 HP Push Moter w/ pull start. It's worked fine for about 4-5 years now, with speratic maintenance (my fault).

It has a good spark plug and a just changed the oil and air-filter and added Fresh gasoline. Since the oil change, it is real hard to start now, I have to prime it several times and sometimes it dies.

The major problem is it will be running normal for a few minutes and then it will start to knock (the best way I know to describe the sound) and it starts smoking white smoke from the muffler. It also does this durring startup. I'm sure waited too long to change the oil this time and the damage is done.

My question is, should I send it out to passture or pay to have the engine rebuilt? Or is there another option?

I don't think it's safe to run it as is, besides it dies every few minutes anyway. If I have to buy a new one, I will, but if it's cheaper to get it rebuilt better than new, I could do that too...

If you really love the mower, fix it. Having a fairly new but second hand Craftsman I half sheared the flywheel key. It took almost two weeks and 4 times the price for parts from Sears Parts Central (they don't stock these at the two nearest Sears stores). I won't buy from Sears again. Good luck.

Check to see if the flywheel key has partially sheared. It can behave that way if the key is halfway sheared off.

I'll bet you overfilled the oil, very easy to do.

Do I just drain some of the oil out. Or is it a major repair?

I concur with Dean, check the oil level.

Oil level too, high, I checked it a few times and it looked alright, after your followup I just went out and doubled checked it and it was about 1/4 of an inch above the full line.

I drained the excess and started it, safter priming it a few times it started and smoked for just a few seconds, now it runs like it always has, good--Thanks isn't enough, but Thank you both anyway, you saved me some serious money.

And Thank God for the Internet.

Not too much oil as you said the smoke was white and not blue. Sounds like a partially sheared flywheel key (ignition is out of time since they are electronic now and flywheel position is real critical to timing), or it has a broken piston. I doubt the broken piston but would bet my money on just a sheared key. Wayne
