Can an old hammer mill be used as a wood chipper/shredder?

The hammer mill would not do much to chip much more than twigs.

I have a great lawn vac/chipper set up (on a trailer) made by EasyRake in the 1990s, now owned by Blue Bird.

It has a heavy duty blower fan (made from 3/16 plate steel) with hammer mills at the ends of the blades and two slots with knives on the fly-wheel portion of fan. The hammer mills are to shred the leafs, sticks etc. when vacuuming. The knives are to do the chipping.

I can't answer your question, but I have a related question myself. I've got a bunch of straw and access to a bunch more. It's a real PITA to use in the horse boxes right from the bale. You can buy a chopper that you feed the bale into and it spits it out in small pieces that make it easier to use as bedding and break down quicker as compost. I could use that $5k for something else though. Can someone think of an old everyday machine that would do that without taking up a lot of room? I was thinking of a corn silage chopper but wouldn't know what (if anything) to do to modify it.

Thanks, and sorry for jumping in on your post.

Some of the old hammer mills had a bale feeder on them. Those grinder/mixers that were popular would feed bales too. Going cheap, but sure not small for what you want. Garden leaf shredder if you feed it by hand.

You know..... ..... Sometimes the most obvious things seem to blow right by. I just saw a garden chopper setting on the curb on the way home. They have a big neck, but the hole to the blades is only 2 inch. Should be able to modify though. Thanks for waking me up....
