I need to weld a bunch of aluminum tubing and plate. It is 6061 and is 3/8 to 1/2 thick. Nothing thiner than 1/4". I have a simple motor powered welder that goes to 400 amps. What do I need to weld this aluminum? Can I use my old welder and ? or do I have to start from scrach.

Well, the amperage is there. If it were me, I would use a spool gun with, 4043 filler I believe but not positive. What kind of output does your machine have? CC? CV? What make and model is your machine?, (that doesn't matter so much, but the output does, but I'm curious.)

You will need a preheat, and will also need to clean the base material REALLY good before you weld on it. Get some chemical for aluminum cleaning from your welding supply, OR use a dedicated aluminum grinding wheel followed up by a DEDICATED TO ALUMINUM MATERIAL ONLY, stainless steel brush. What is the project you are doing going to be used for? The more information you provide on this page, the more these guys on here know.
