What is the pto rpm required for generators that run off the pto? My trator has 540rpm.

I believe you will find that PTO generators are available in either of the common PTO speeds: 540 or 1000 RPM.

Does the generator mount on the 3 pt or do you back your tractor up to it , sorta like a cow to a Bull Durham sign???

Most mount directly to your three point. It is possible that some of the over 10KW units might be on "sleds" due to the size, I'm not sure.

At both farms were I work they have generators mounted on trailers. When the need arises they just drop the hithch pin in and hook up the pto and they are ready. We ran into a 'problem' a while ago when the tractor that they needed to use on the generator had a problem and could not be switched to 540 rpm from the 1000 rpm. After a little quick thinking they grabbed the pto shaft off from the bale chopper which is 540 on one end and 1000 on the other. Whith it set up that way the tractor runs at a little over an idle so it is quiet and easy on fuel while still putting out the needed power. Works great for running the welder and such lesser needs but when they need to run the whole farm during a power outage they still use it on 540.

A company called Northern sells one.
Their web site is a bit weak but you can order a catalog from them. Its got a lot of "handy-man" stuff in it, I enjoy browsing though it.

Link

Cheers,
Jim

A lot of guys use those PTO adapters for generators. Work good.

Works almost as good as my 540RPM mower running on

1000- cuts smooth!

Another thing to consider. If you have a PTO generator, you don't have to buy the engine.

Can get a bigger generator for less cost.
