well today i was delivering a vehicle to one of our customers. he goes to my dumpster to toss something out, hey what the....!!! he says. somebody tossed out about 60 or so brand new bungee cords, the rubber ones, 3 semi trailer nylon tie down straps, prolly 20 footers, a 12 inch crescent wrench and a 35 ft tape measure. our customer is in the landscaping business and a good friend, so he took all the bungees and the tow straps, i got the tape measure and the crescent wrench. why would anybody throw that stuff out. never ceases to amaze me what people throw away.

I once worked for an aviation company that, to save inventory taxes, brought in a 30 ft. open dumpster, then proceeded to throw away $250,000 worth of new and remanufactured parts. During work every thing went into the dumpster in an orderly fashion. After work everything came out in a disorderly fashion. When all was said and done, the dumpster was still empty when they hauled it away. The Boss couldn't understand why.

I worked for a place (auto parts store/gas station) once that would write stuff off periodically for one reason or another. Everything had to be mutilated with 3 people witnessing and signing off on a paper before putting in the dumpster. I've destroyed many a useful part or tool by taking off or scratching beyond recognition the data plate. What good is it if you can't read who made it?

I saw Sears tossing many a chainsaw, pressurewasher and powertool into their dumpsters...
once it goes XOM ("extremely old merchandise", about a year on the floor), they write it off and toss it

My father in law got a Case Garden tractor with attachments that someone tried (too heavy to put in dumpster)to throw away in his Dumpster at his construction site. He gave it to my son and together we got it running. Amazing items he finds that people dump into his dumpsters after hours.

Anyway, I find taht the most interesting places to dumpster dive are construction sites... just check with the foreman first.

I've found a few hand tools in dumpsters, my wifes uncle found a live week or so old calf in a dumpster once he raised it on a bottle, a friend drug a table saw out of one and it worked like new.

The best way to put a stop to bums going through your trash is to pour oil or paint on the fabric of furniture that is being thrown out, for tools, wood, appliances, etc, a few licks with a sledge will usually put them in a condition that they cannot be salvaged.
A few minutes spent making things unusable, makes it exceedingly worthwhile and pleasurable to deny a bum or welfare cheat a chance to live off the sweat of my labor.
I even go so far as to tear the sports section of the newspaper I buy, into little strips, and leave in the restaurant after reading everything but the sports pages, this prevents some idiotic sports 'fan' from becoming even more stupid, from my 50 cents.

I"m with Coloken also.
Why would you be so selfish (not to mention childish), that if you don"t want something, you destroy it rather than let someone who can use it have it.
Bet you don"t recycle either.

Careful! This forum has always been a place for information, friendly advice, etc. If you are going to resort to off-color name-calling, then please take your nasty comments to You-tube, or someplace else where they might appreciate it more. And, i've been writing in these columns for quite a long time--i'm not some nut who just got off the boat!

Depending on how they were packaged, if they were in fact new it's possible a burglar cleaned someplace out in a hurry then later disposed of what he didn't want. Happens quite a bit.

I'm a firm believer if you're throwing something away that I can use, I'll take it. Lumber, skids for stacking wood, pipe, iron stakes etc.

Whenever I go by our local Tractor Supply, I have a look in there rolloff dumpster. There's always some angle iron in there, and a few months ago I found an 18volt sears drill driver( I think thats what you call it)

It was a little scratched up but works great. A friend found a large and I mean large tool box in there last year. Always worth a look.

I get a kick out of going to the City solid waste transfer station and going thru the dumpster there which is supposed to be there to collect recycleable metal items. First of all the gentlemen with reflective vests and the city logos get first dibs, (job perks) then you have dodge the supervisor who makes it his job to make sure that if it goes in his dumpster it's going to the dump by golly.
