When I was a kid, we had sheep and the neighbor down the road had sheep and goats. He had a tool for grabbing the animals. It was a pole with a loop on the end. He would point the pole at the animal, drop the loop over the head and then pull the other end of the rope at his end of the pole to control the animal. My dad and him had a name for it that I can't remember. I know my dad was always going to make one but I guess it was easier to borrow it. I have goats now and it sure would make it easy instead of chasing them. Anyone have a drawing or know what I'm talking about? Maybe someone makes them now. I have a dog but he's still a pup and learning. Thanks for any info.

My grandad and his friends used to make them out of a piece of pipe (ex. conduit) and a LONG automotive belt that was cut and in one long length. one end of the belt was attached to the end of the conduit on the outside and the other end was feed through the pipe. the tail stuck out of the "handle end of the pipe to be pulled and doubledd over to hold after the catch was made. They used them for trapping in south texas.

we used to use something like that on hogs--had a loop on a pole--plastic covered cable, i believe. when you snagged one, you pulled hard on free end of cable. it had a locking deal on it that made sure hog won't get loose while he dragged you around pen.

I use a "shepherd's crook" sometimes on my sheep, have one for a neck catch and a smaller one for a leg catch but they hang in the barn mostly. Goats are pretty savvy bout things like that and are masters at duckin and divin after being caught a time or two. You might check a couple of places online like Sydell Inc, Mid-States or Pipestone and see what they have to offer.

I would agree with Mike been out of the sheep buisness a few years, never needed a crook around the farm for sheep just a pail of corn they headed were ever I wanted them to go, but we did use it at the sale barn when unloading, as far as Goats dad swears by hanging a piece of lead just below the right or left ear. he says they always mind after that.
