Trucks are tools right? mine is anyway. I have an 89' Ford F-150 XLT Lariet with the 5.0FI and 5 speed stick. This old girl has 206,000 miles on it and the rear differential is starting to get noisy even with Lucas lube in it. It is a type 19 axle according to the door tag. I just bought an 84' Bronco for parts that has the type 19 axle. Are these axles the same thing only 5 years apart? I'm thinking it's too easy just changing the rear axle but way too expensive rebuilding the old one.
I posted in the Ford trucks forum over a week ago but nobody seems to know anything there. Thanks

the 84 has (most likley) a 9 inch diff which is removable carrier. the newer truck has an 8.8 which is an integral carrier (not removable from the rear axle housing). most likley you need to re-bearing it. none of the peices from one to the other will interchange. Dave

just swap punkins ,and they do tend to go south about that milage .as most vans on the fleet same rear end were replaced around the 2-250 mark and lucas did not make them last any longer .

I think all 150/Bronco axles are the same.. Treadwidth, etc. Spring are top mounted, Don't be talkin' about Ranger BroncoII stuff. Entirely different platform and configuration. Older axles won't have the sender unit on top of the pumpkin for speedometer-antilock sensor, just make sure your axle ratios are in sync if 4WD, if 2WD it's whatever you want.

If you have a friend at a wrecking yard, they may have a Hollander Interchange guide. Years ago, I installed the complete differential carrier from a 1965 Dodge Polara into a 1967 D-150. Mine was 3.55 with 3-speed trans and I swapped in a 4 speed trans with extra low gear and used the 2.73 Polara rear gears. The housings and axles would not interchange but the differential did.

I have a Hollander Manual bought on ebay a while back. It shows the entire axle assembly being directly compatible between an F150 and a Bronco OF THE SAME YEARS.

However, the axle assembly for 87 and up is different from the axle assembly for 80 to 86. The difference may be as trivial as provisions for ABS, or there may be dimensional differences or other incompatibilities.

The 80 to 86 models (of both) used either the Ford 9 inch axle assembly with its removable carrier or the Ford 8.8 inch axle assembly with a non-removable carrier. The 87 and up models used only the Ford 8.8.

Within the 8.8 inch family (probably what you have for both), the ring and pinion are the same through all years. The left and right axles themselves are different from each other, and there is a difference between the 80 to 86 axles and the 87 and up axles. I could not find info on the differential.

Some spring pads are on top, some on the bottom. Look closely at this as it could be a deciding factor. I'm guessing you have the integral axle housing and gear carrier, and not the older housing with the removable "chunk".

You don't have to change the whole thing ....just exchange the center "differential".....also called the "pumkin"...you may have to use the axels also.....Don

Probably 8.8". Check the wheelbase and spring mounts. Those might be different. But the salvage yard has books that show which will interchange, check with them.

The axle out of the 89 may have a connector on the top, above and to the drivers side of the pinion, that the 84 axle won't. Don't worry about it. All that is for on the 87-91 trucks is your ABS if yours was equipped with it from the factory.
