I live in MA, the feed comming in from the meter socket to mainpanel is 4guage aluminum. The breaker box has a 65 amp main breaker. Can I run a larger breaker on 4 guage service and still be within code? Could I run a sub panel to shed with a 60 breaker off main panel using 4 guage aluminum for that.

Michigan nothing less than 100 amp 3 wire, #2 aluminum. Size of house and future needs may call for more. Time to rewire.

Sounds like it is time for a new 200 Amp service upgrade....The upgrade for the house, "service change" it is called will run about 1500 to 2000 dollars in my area, SW ohio. That would include new breaker box, meter base, Service entrance cable and grounding to be up to code. Might be a bit more if your local authority is enforcing the new NEC arcfault breaker rule. Around here, only bedrooms have to be on arc faults, new rule says all 15 and 20 ckts to be arcfault. Good luck.

You already are at the amperage limit on the 4 gauge aluminum. I suspect that you already knew that. So long as the main overcurrent protective device is proper for the conductor size, whatever loads are desired can be added downstream from that device. But it will trip if the load at a given moment is too great.
