My back up compressor cuts in just as it should, but it will not cut out unless I tap the switch (with a screwdriver). I have not used this compressor all winter, but with the coming of warm weather I'll be doing bigger jobs and it'll be used again.

I have not yet taken the cover off to look at things. Can this problem be corrected by filing the points?

I might add, the switch is only about three years old, is wired for 220, and on a 1.5 hp motor. The one on my main compressor is much older and working just fine.

Thank you,
Glenn F.

It may help but the problem is once that nice shiny silvery coating is removed they can stick or burn easier next time. Id first try a less abrasive clean/buff/polish and then some electrical contact cleaner followed by a good clean up n drying n maybe light lube the spring n trip n hinge assembly area so all is good n free n smooth. If the points continue to burn n stick a new switch isnt all that expensive and perhaps the exisitng one isnt high enough current or motor HP rated ??

PS if I had a sticking pressure switch Id make sure the high pressure pop off valve is functioning!!!

Just remember that wd-40 IS flammable, I know a guy who used it to loosen up a dry bearing on a well pump motor and when he kicked the pump on he lost his eyebrows.

Glenn I had the same problem on my Sears 220v compressor. I took the cover off and spayed it with a little WD40 and it works like a new again. Gary

sounds simmilar to the pressure switch on my well pump except mine would mess up on the lo pressure side. A points file and a shot of PB blaster has solved the problem.
unplug/shut breaker off first.
don't ask how I know this....
