I have a Innova 3100 code reader that came up with and error when I hooked it up to a friends 05 PSD f-250. According to the sticker under the hood it is OBD2 certified. I got the same reading when I hooked it up to my 05 PSD f-250. Friends CEL was on.
Do I need another reader for the diesels?

IF ya want to get into the Mfg. codes and have something that will work on all this new junk then ya best break the piggy bank and look for the top end OTC's of the high end Snap ON's . And when they get out dated you spend more bucks and up grade them . I have been looken at the OTC's . But before ya click and buy best read up on what ya need and want and plan on spending over 400 on up for a used one.

hey tractor vet, ya mean this one?? i had to take the plunge and upgrade our old scanner, this is the modis from snap on, 9 grand, ouch!! got to where we couldnt clear air bag codes and clear other stuff on the late models. has the domestic, asian, european and heavy truck software on it. even has a usb port to hook to a laptop to access mfr's database to flash new ecm's. ah the joys of technology.

Now i have not seen that one yet . I have been looking at the OTC gensius ( spelling) with at least the 2.0 up to 2004 as that would cover all that i stick my fingers in at this time. What i would realy like is to be able to HACK into the fuel and timing sets on the wife's 03 Durango . It has had a miss fire on 2 and 7 that nobody can fix and they keep telling me that it is a lean burn from curb idle to 1200 . Would like to fatten up the idle and bump the timing up 3-5 degrees .

It is not the "lean burn" doing it by design. These engines have known problems with the valley pan intake seal leaking and more often, the valves are seating bad in the head. They MAY show a difference in compression from a cyl that isn't mis-firing or not. leakdown test will show it. They also crack between the valve holes in the head. There is a reason why there are no re-man head available.

I've been looking myself - not much out there that'll handle diesels (they all have the same problem). Basically its either one of the newer tuner/programmers that has a code reading capability, or the AutoEnginuity software. You might find a programmer used, but watch out that its not VIN locked. Most of them will only let you install the tuning on one vehicle at a time. Otherwise the AutoEnginuity software is probably a better deal unless you want to the increased power from a tuner.

Either way, be prepared to cough up some $$$.

PS. There is some sharware software for reading OBD-II codes, but I haven't found one that suports the Ford diesel. Maybe time to look again...

info on navistar engine in your ford motor product will show OB11 exempt.common scantools won't link up.

YEP the diesels have different software and different codes unique to the PSD.
