I have been washing tractor parts on my restoration in a 5 gallon bucket.I am ready now to get a parts washer but don't know what to look for.Northern catalogue has several.Should I look at the kind that sit on a barrel,or the self contained rectangular style? What is the min GPH I should look for? I do need a large area of wash .. What should I expect to pay and should I look for a brand name.Too many questions? Sorry

I bought mine from Sam's club in Henrietta, N.Y.. It looks like the 55 gallon drm model from Northern comany. I then went and looked around a couple independant garages to see what they were using for degreaser's, then went and bought 5 gallons of that solution. Luck to all.

Be careful of the Safety Kleen, You will still be responsible for the disposal for the rest of your life. Believe me I know. Our local SafetyKleen Truck was involved in an accident after picking up our used solvent, and guess what? you guessed it,we had to pay for the clean up. thank god for insurance. Best of luck, keith

Before you go off and buy one of the 55 gallon drum types (which are very nice), check on your laws. You might find yourself in posession of a drum of expensive used solvent that you cannot dispose of. Here in Maryland, it's going to cost you pretty close to a thousand dollars to get rid of that drum, and at that, you are only partially rid of it. You're responsible for the rest of your life for the contents of that drum.

So contact a company like SafetyKleene and see what advice they can give you. It very well may pay to rent from them instead of buying your own.

OK Guys, Thanks... From the info it looks like the best bet is a barrel type washer that is the largest that I can afford. I was expecting to pay about 150 but I may have to go to $200 to even come close to what I need. I guess as always it doesn't pay to buy the cheap stuff... Thanks... MJZ

If you have the money and room you should get a rotary parts washer. It uses water and soap at very high presure and temp to clean. It is like a big dishwasher with no chemicals to dispose of. N.

Hey Marty,

I agree with Z-bar, but I still have the type that doesn't sit on a tank. Have to just break down and clean it out every so often, MESSY.

Another very important thing to look for is a pump that is compatible with whatever you're going to use as a solvent. I would NEVER use a water submersible in a petroleum based product, and killed a petroleum compatible pump with a water based solution in VERY short order, few days, maybe a week.

About the only petroleum based products available these days dry very slowly and don't work nearly as well as the stuff in my dad's shop when I was a kid. BUT, it WON'T rust things like bearings, or leave water inside of somthing you don't want it in, transmission valve bodies, bearings, carbs, etc.

The CITRUS based stuff works GREAT (honest and I was VERY skeptical). However, it isn't cheap and WILL load up and become unusable, requiring replacement, unlike my rotating buckets of kerosene, which eventually settles out and can be reused. Also, this stuff is best when you have a deep sink with hot water nearby. Go from the parts washer to that, rinse as hot as you can stand it and the thing is dry, ready to paint without a trace to greasy anything anywhere, quickly.

Last is the water based heavy duty degreasers, better than dawn dishwashing detergent, but not much. It's cheap, but still not a good value.

Like engines, there is NO replacement for displacement, get the biggest one you can afford and have room for.

Marty, I got one from northern a few years ago, it was a 20 gal. set on a stand, had the pump, can't remember the gpm, it worked good, but I didn't like it. Have since sold it and gonna get one that sets on a barrel. The tank type like I had keeps all the gunk that you clean off in the tank and your cleaning solution stays dirty. with the barrel type all the gunk goes to the bottom of the barrel. my 2 cents worth.
