I do gobs of fabrication...My favorite is Metabo.. I've owned Makita's, And can make them go to their knees..First they get hot , then you can smell that plastic smell...After that , toss 'em...The last Metabo I bought is now almost 6 years old and working like a fresh one...The Makita's cost between $ 79.00- $ 120.00....The Metabo was over $200.00 and worth it...These are 4 1/2"-5" grinders..

if you are looking for a top ntch high quality grinder, try the metabo. we went to these when i worked in a fab shop. they are dandys. soft start, so when you pull the trigger, the grinder spools up slow, not the wrist twister like a milwaukee. they are a might pricey tho. 2-3 hundos for one.

My neighbour has a shop that he works in full time . About all he has are 10 amp Makita's. Very nice to work with, with excellent power. Some are 15 years old and still work good.

Hi dej,

I've been using the Makita #9505-B, 5", 10000rpm, 5/8-11 arbor, about $125, for the past 30yrs. A great medium duty grinder and cutter. There twice as big as a 4 1/2" but only weighs a little more, so great hand control with no fatique. They also come with a arbor set for 7/8" wheels. I own four of them so I don't have to change wheels. They work well up too about 6" wheels, like for sanding or cutting. Just make sure your disc's are 10000rpm rated.

Just like any small/medium sized grinder, just don't hog it down or it'll burn up. If your dropping RPM while grinding then your pushing too hard.

If you need heavy grinding, then you need a 7" or larger. You just can't beat a Milwaukee 7" for the heavy stuff or large wire wheel. There's just no replacement for heavy grinding.

If you are willing to pay the price you can get a grinder that will last awhile but it pays to do some shopping. Google Makita and you will get an idea of the selection available. They have long handle 5" angle grinders in three sizes - 9 ,10, and 12.5 amp. They all look about the same on the outside but there's a world of difference on the inside. The other major brands should have about the same selection.

The local farm store will carry the 9 or 10 amp. models because they are cheap and they sell fast. Jim

You get what you pay for with grinders. If you buy a 4 1/2 inch and use it for heavy work, don't blame the grinder. A 5 inch 10 amp will do more but for heavy grinding you need a good heavy 7 inch at about 15 amps. Name brands are better than the store brand or budget grinders.

I've had very good service from Makitas. A while back somebody asked the same question and I said I'd had good luck with a cheap Clarke. I should have kept my mouth shut, right after that the switch quit on it, but I had probably got my money's worth had used it several years. Lee

My experience on the cheap 4" or 4-1/2" grinders is that the switch is usually the first thing to go. When I was mig welding for a living, we had DaWalt small grinders, and they seemed to hold up pretty well...especially considering the abuse they saw from some of the folks in the plant.

go to the archives, this has come up many times, and I think many are using bosch with good luck, also makitas. shows you get what you pay for, but sometimes its worth it to destroy on from HF. around here we have canadian tire, you can go get a fresh grinder every week under warranty if thats your style.
