New laptop... windows Vista or XP?

My daughter is graduating from college and we want to get her a new laptop. Nobody in the family/friends circle has Vista and I am concerned about some of the stories that I have heard. I can still get a new XP machine and we all feel very comfortable with that. She and her better half will be moving out of state and I want to get something as trouble free as possible.

Are there good reasons to stay away from Vista? I do realize that it is more graphic intense and will eat more resources but beyond that I just don't know what to think.

Stay with XP. There are fewer device drivers for Vista, software is written for XP with luck, you could get it to run under Vista. Buddy of mine beta tested Vista and has been running it for almost 2 years. They sent him 6 revisions before the public release. Its still unstable on most systems and gives a memory dump file about 60kb in size. Definitly a no from me for Vista.

XP pro 2nd choice. 1st choice would be a Mac and tell Bill Gates his stuff isn't satisfactory.

If you go Vista - at least get the Home Premium. If you are looking at "Home Basic" get XP instead.

I have been running Vista home pro since the first of December with zero (0) problems of any sort related to programing. I run XP pro at work and send Excel and Word files back and forth to home daily and have never had the first glitch. Did have a few problems getting used to differances between Vista and former progamming. Vista had problems at first and I am sure that they will survive in cyberspace until they become urban legand but it has done everything I have asked of it in fine style.

Purchased new computer with Vista installed and it works great. Had XP before.

I bought a new laptop last year to work my job while on the road. Tthe darned are you really sure you want to do this pop ups are annoying as heck.
Also I gfound it would not work with some of my corporate VPN software. so I blew Vista away and loaded XP Pro.

If you can avoid vista, do it. Among other things, data doesn't always recognize back and forth (ie. she creates a file (excel spreadsheet) and sends it to you, you may or may not open it). College kids (just kids in general) are a whole lot smarter than us, you'll probably be safer to have her pick what she wants and get it for her. Monkey's off your back then.

You may not have a choise and have to get Vista. I recomend XP. Vista is just "Too much", Played with it for 6 months here on two computers..happiest day was when I got rid of it.

most of vista's bugs are gone now. You really need to check with your daughter and see what they expect a computer to do and go from there. You would hate to get them something underpowered and yet there's no need to buy the most powerful if they are just going to surf and balance checkbook.

I'd trade this whole danged computer for a machine running Windows 98! I could do lots more on the old one, but this vista is junk! I write up something i want to save. Then i click "Save". It saves it--somewhere out in la-la-land! Never to be found again! It never asks for an id to put on it, and even if i write an ID just sends it off to Mars! But--if i draw up some plans for an item, and poke send--which should bring up the email program, outlook express, or whatever is the mail program, it sends the image or the pages off to Timbuctoo, never to be accessed again. Or, it only sends out part of a 3-page letter or document! I can't even resurrect a file, to change it--Gonzo! A friend sez to go where we bought it, and they have something there to correct the problems! I have something here that will correct the problems--a 12 guage! I could cheerfully hammer this thing into a zillion pieces, thats the way i feel about it! And, it isn't a lap-top.
