OT 2001 Chevy 1500

Good morning. My mother has this 01 Chevy 1500 Silverado, only has 50K on it, told me that yesterday when she started it a couple of different times that the gear indicator/odometer light and fuel gauge wouldnt work until she turned on her turn signal. I kept it overnight and checked bat cables this morning and did find the ground somewhat loose. Tightened it up and started it and had no gear indicator/odom, fuel or temp gauge and no tach or speedo. Did a wiggle test to no avail so headed to town about 14 miles away. About half way to town the gear indicator lit up and my the tach went to about 500 rpm, flipped the blower switch on and off a couple of times caused the tach to jump a little and then everything came on and has been working since. Does this sound like a ground loose or anybody have any ideas? Sorry so long but would certinly appreciate any and all help. Thanks.

There is a service bulletin about the wiring for the transmission. It overheats or something and causes the cluster failure. Both the wiring and the cluster will need replaced, but it will take care of the problem.

The cluster was replaced once in mine. It started doing it again almost immediately, I found the service bulletin about the transmission wiring (automatic) and took the service bulletin number to the dealer. They performed the instructed fix and I never had the problem again.

Mine was a 2000 Silverado 4 X 4 with the 5.3 and the automatic. It has been gone now for 2 weeks. I miss it, but a 2004 Suburban is trying to fill the gap.

IP clusters and ignition switches are notorious for crappin' out.

Can't tell more than I really know, but one of my friends has a 1500 4x4 that would shut down going down the road. Mechanic finally figured out that the wiring to the tachometer causing it, clipped the wire and taped it off, everything else working OK now. DOUG

Thats a new one on me. I'm a tech at a Chevy dealer. Usually one or more gages stick or otherwise don't work. Your best bet is when it isn't working right, hot foot it to your local GM dealer and get them to observe the IP cluster data with a Tech 2. If the data is correct, you need a cluster. The cluster in your truck is notoriously trouble prone. If I remember correctly, GM extended the warranty to like 70k on them. I'm not sure about the year though.
