Need ideas on separating two aluminum tubes that have been together to long and have corroded. Is there something I can soak the joint with to loosen? All ideas will be appreciated.

I'm trying T_Bone's vinegar suggestion first. If that doesn't work, I will do the wax trick and if that won't work out comes the cutting wheel. Thanks all for the ideas. I'll let you know the outcome.

Warm it gently(heat gun/blow dryer)melt paraffin or candle wax into the joint, like sweat soldering copper.A hose clamp tight on the tube will give you something to tap gently on.

Bike seat post?
See this a lot on aluminum bikes. do you need to keep the peices, or is one expendable?

You could do this- take a whiz wheel and cut a slot down the outside peice. This should loosen it, and also allow some penetrant in if needed. very light heat on the outside tube would also help. When reassembling, use a hose clamp over the slot- or another suitable clamp.

Hi Bill,

I'd use vinegar and it'll take a couple days at the least and if a tight joint, maybe several weeks of soaking.
