I am looking at buying a chain hoist around two tons or maybe 1 and a half tons. Is this something a man should spend the extra money on and get something made in the US or Canada or will a Chinese do? The prices vary considerably. Also, when it says a 10' fall, does it mean from the hoist to the ground, the total extension is 10'? Thanks for your help.

When did they quit calling them "chain falls?" Am I that old. Probably.

Even many of the name brand chain hoists are China made now. I have a Laurin (sp) and it is China made and works real well. I'm impressed with the quality and function of it.

Name brands I'm familiar with are Budgit and Columbus McKinnon (CM), Coffing, and Yale, and all are excellent quality. Mine is a 3 ton, on a 4 ton trolley, both were new when I got them, and are used on a 2 ton portable gantry crane, so I cannot really overload the hoist.

I personally will not buy something from China that involves my personal safety. This includes jacks, jackstands and any kind of lifting apparaus including chainfalls. I search at auctions for American made tools. Just my 2 cents.

When I buy the cheap stuff I usually but something rated at 2x what I need and it works out fine.

Just be sure what you hook it to will handle the load. ie don't pull your ceiling down on ya.

QB,
The way I understand it, the 10' is the distance the hoist will lift... catalog states "lift height, 10'... minimum headroom required, 13 9/16" I buy a lot from ENCO (a subsidary of MSC... usually have very good prices on almost everything) at 1.800.873.3626 or at use-enco.com. Current sales flyer lists 1 ton COFFING hoist (#RU619-2950) w/10' lift @ $151.87... a two ton w/15' lift @ $314.32 I'm sure they have others available... HTH, D
