My brother has a Dewalt circular saw, model DW359. This saw has a few years on it, but low hours. He was using it yesterday with an abrasive cut-off blade on some sheet metal and after a short while it starting loosing rpm"s and then shut-off. It will not restart.

The saw didn"t appear to be operating abnormally prior to the above symptoms and did not appear (or smell) as though it was over heating. It is not locked-up either.

Seems like a real nice saw and I hate to see him toss it into the trash.

Any advice as to what might be wrong?

Thanks!
Bill

I once had a similar problem with a Craftsman saw. When I took it apart I found the only problem was that one of the wires had fallen out of the switch (they just plug in and are held by friction fit). Plugged the wire back in and its still running today (about 15-20 years later). HTH Jim

I know this may sound like I'm being a smart butt here but did you check to see if there is a reset button on it any where? I have had guys bring things like this from time to time and it was just a rest button.

Last time that happened to me, I'd sawed through the cord.

Now you to want to take it appart and look for a broken wire or bad connection in there somewhere.
Also want to make sure that no metal filings are shorting any of the copper segments. I have repaired saws that were used for cutting metal and found them stuck between the comutator segments. Use an awl or a bent machinest's pick to clean the grooves between each segment. this should raise a copper burr on the edges of each segment. You can use some emery cloth to remove the burr and clean the outer brush contact area when done, if you have access to a lathe you can chuck it up and put a nice shine on it with the emery cloth. If it has bad grooving in it you can actually turm them out but only remove enough to clean it up.
Be certain that no metal filings have worked their way in between any of the windings, comutator and stator.
Does anything smell cooked?
A bad bearing will cause problems too. The commutator and stator can't come in contact with each other.
let us know what you find.

Well, here's what we've found.

Saw is plugged-in, outlet and power is available.

Pulled the brushes, they look almost new.

Any other ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Bill

Switch, broken wire or bad plug on end of cord. Take the handle off and use a test light or meter to see if you have power there. If you do, pull the trigger and see if power is going to the motor. The plug in on the wall might be faulty as well. I've seen it before where you try a different plug in and it works. Be careful when checking for power.

That's not some obsolete piece of junk. Might be worth the time to contact the manufacturer to have it checked out by a factory service center. Link

Shorted armature and or field coils when you get a slow down and no restart.Heavy arcing at the brushes then slow down and smoke.

I would say brushes, Weak spring, brush binding in holdrt or perhaps etal filings got inside and messed it up.

Sometimes the brushes will bind in the holders and not make a good contact with the comutator which can cause it to do that. pull the caps off the brush holders and make sure the brush slides in and out real easy.
You might want to make sure that the problem is not the cord.

Sometimes a wire can become detached.
