My father-in-laws neighbor gave him a, I'm guessing, early 70's vintage Homlite XL chain saw because he could not get it to start. Said he had it serviced a while back and everything seemed fine, but now it won't start. Well, clearly based on the sludge in the tank, and the antique petina on the service tag, he got is serviced years ago and let is sit till the gas evaporated, then, low and behold it won't start.

My father-in-law is a fisherman, and gardner, and wood worker, but not much into mechanical things. He brought it over, I put gas in it, checked for good spark (fine), alittle carb cleaner, a little starter fluid, turns over, runs rough for a bit, keep the gas flowing, adjust the carb, 10 minutes latter she was starting and running as good as new.

Now my father in law (also one of my best freinds) has a handy, neat looking vintage saw.

Ever notice on a crescent wrench that one side says 6, 8, 10, or 12 inch and the other side shows the mm equivelant (200, 300mm etc)?

I was working on a truck once with my supervisor/shop foreman standing by (we were soldiers). I was under the truck and asked him to hand me a 7/8 wrench. He couldn't find it so I said just give me the big crescent. He rattled around for a while and said "manure, just minute, I'll get one" and was gone. I knew I had 3 in my box so crawled out, got one and was finished when he came back with a 7/8 wrench. He had gone about half a mile to the tool room and could only find metric crescent wrenches, so borrowed a 7/8 inch wrench for me. When we got back to the shop, all the crescents were hanging on the silhouette board with the mm side facing out. I turned one around and asked him when I'd be going to the promotion board. Poor guy probably never lived that one down.

I have a couple quarts of compression leftover from my old shop,but since we've gone metric I cant seem seem to get rid of them.Any one intereseted 50% off.

I think those couple quarts of compression you have left over probably were part of what was lost from a 5.7 Olds diesel engine when the head gasket popped. Now, if any of you have a DJ5 Jeep stretcher, let me know. The DJ5's are the old 1/4 ton right hand drive postal jeeps, they are too small for mail volume some days. It needs to be the multi purpose stretcher, need more lenght and height both. Also needs to be the self adjusting type, so the mail you need is always within reach. DOUG

Hi Guido,

My father-in-laws' new find doesn't look anything like that one. It is a red XL, copper tubing exterior to the casting for gas tank to carb, and oil tank to oiler.

The gas cap and air filter arrangments do look similar.

Used to work with a guy that had more money than brains. I got several "worn out" chainsaws from him. Amazing what a carb kit and a fuel filter will fix!

When I turned 18,My grandfather gave me a hammer that had been his great grandfathers. It has been handed down in our family all these years. I keep it in a special box-a place of honor. The stories it could tell. I've had to replace the head and I put in a new handle but other than that it's all original equiptment.
