leaving battery in charger

Back about two months ago or so I posted about putting a timer on the charger for my Bosch 18V battery powered tools. I put a one hour timer on the plug-in the charger plugs into and so far it has been the cat's meow for me. The one hour timer seems to be long enough.

The one question I had was if the charger would suck juice back out of the battery if the battery sat there in the charger for awhile. Well, during the time that I've been laid up, a battery sat in the charger for five weeks with the timer turned off, and it did discharge the battery. I put it on the drill and it just barely squeaked the drill over. The other Bosch batteries I had laying around still spun the tools over OK. The battery that was in the charger is almost new, so I'm pretty sure it would have kept it's charge if it had not been in the charger.

fixerupper; thanks for the update--I was one that read your original post,& hooked my 14.4 charger to an old timer. I have found my battery to be down on charger also, but they are old & maybe self-discharging. just a thought--could a diode be used on one of the DC feed wires to prevent feedback? I have a pkg from radio shack I use on delco alt. may try it.

Hello fixerupper.
The battery is new, as you state. Test it for keeping the charge, I would charge it fully, and take it out of the charger. That way you will know if was the charger that discharged the battery.

The battery was bought new and was put in service for about a month before it was left in the charger. It was running the tools for about as long as it should have, but now that you mention it, I might just charge it and set it aside for awhile to see what happens. Jim

it does vary. some chargers will drin the battery when not powered, and some will not.
