Bought a 50 ton Scotchman (single phase) iron worker today. I know its too late to ask now, but are they a good piece of equipment?

Made an awful lot of brackets on them old buggers. Back when electricians didn't have or need unistrut. Millwrights sure didn't want you using it. Fleetwood 1969.

Hi macco,

Since you're getting some warnings about things that can go wrong with an iron worker, let me throw in a couple. The hold-down for the punch is U shaped, open at the front. You don't ever want to punch a piece of metal that the hold-down doesn't contact evenly from side to side. It isn't a problem on the downward stroke, but as the punch lifts it is often stuck pretty tightly in the workpiece. If it is supported unevenly it can snap off the punch which is quite brittle. We made a tool to deal with the situation of sometimes having to punch a hole near the edge of the work. It is a piece of 1/4" plate cut into the shape of a letter Y (the cutout is actually U shaped, but I doubt that that matters). By placing it on top of the work before the punch comes down, the work is supported evenly on the upstroke. The same tool is also useful when punching any metal thinner than 1/4" which is often bent upward as the punch withdraws.

When shearing a piece of metal which is too short to go under the hold-down, the normal practice is to overlap it with a longer piece of metal that will go under. I made a hold-down tool shaped like a margin trowel (square end trowel) so that I don't have to be trying to position a piece of metal that is flat against the table but has to be raised inside the fence to go over the workpiece.

Another safety tip:
When I was an apprentice I worked in an General Motors assembly plant installing all new conveyors for a model change over. I was working for Mid-West conveyors, and they brought in the biggest Iron Worker I�ve ever seen, even to this day! 5-people could work on it at the same time. First and only Iron Workers I�ve seen that could shear box tube! Anyway to my point, someone on night shift installed a new hole punch dies, and got the two pieces mixed up, did not try them manually first! Just stepped on the pedal! The all hands safety meeting the next morning it was reported that a chunk of the die hit this guy just off center of his chin, and blew his jaw out all the way out to just below his ear! As long as I live I�ll never forget that story.
So if you�re not familiar with the use of any of these Iron Workers please be careful!

Yes! Very good machine with lots of attachments and tooling available. Be extra, extra careful with it though. You could lose a limb before you realized it was gone. Never try to hold a short piece by hand and make sure the hold down is set close when shearing plate. It stops the plate from bouncing and rounding off the blades on the ironworker. Also make sure your fingers aren't under the piece your working with. I've used several ironworkers of different makes. A little while ago I worked in a shop that had a 125 ton Kingsland. I think it would shear 3/4 inch plate about 10 inches wide or so. Maybe even 1 inch. I can't remember but it sure made a bang shearing the thick stuff. Punching holes has to be one of the big advantages of an ironworker. You can punch any shape you need. For round holes in mild steel, the rule of thumb is to never use a punch smaller than the thickness your punching or you could break the punch. Also periodically oiling the punch extends its life. Now I want an ironworker.

Hi macco,

At the community college welding shop, the 80 ton, 3-phase iron worker is probably my favorite tool. It's definitely the tool I miss the most on the rare occasions when it's out of service.
